Side kick, had a weak moment a while ago and bought something which might very well just be an expensive pile of metal junk, but at least it came with some ancillaries like carbs, fan and oil cooler... Time to start collecting bits for a hot 2.2 or 2.4 as a long term project me thinks :-)

Keep the pace up Magnus, July'll be here in but a blink of the eye!

Good to see your progress :)

Carbs look interesting, what are they?

Cheers Darren, clearly current life setup isn't ideal for quick progress with the Porker being in Sweden, the family in Zurich and myself in Glasgow, work's crazy busy at the moment too... So the car might not be completely ready in July but it WILL take me to CLM in one way or another!

Carbs are lowly Zenith TIN 40's identical to the standard ones currently on the car, I think most people prefer Webers for their spares availabillity but with some thinking I believe they can be made to work.

Hi Magnus

If you are in Glasgow, why not pop along to our get together. Have a look in future events section.

Admittely not the most exciting of updates but here it is, first few part has been completely taken back to bare metal by shotblasting and sanding before receiving 3 rounds of PPG's finest epoxy DP 40. Tomorrow morning all backsides will receive a few layers of dark grey top coat, PPG DPM400.

Time for an update, spent looooong hours on the car last week.

Found some bad news when starting to take the body back to bare metal :(

Bit more cutting to get all the rot out and a new inner jacking support fabricated and welded in
Image

New piece of inner sill fabricated and welded in, have ordered the outer support at the local OPC and the plan is to weld in that by next weekend, I don't feel like trying to fabricate nor to weld in the outer sill myself so will leave that to the panel beater who'll adjust the panel gaps before the car goes for final paint.

Plenty of blasting and sanding to get all corners clean, the rear light boxes wore by far the worst...

...and after 4 days the shell was welded were needed and clean enough to be primed

Ok so its time for another update, progress has been made the last couple of weeks but unfortunately no photos, hopefully it'll serve its purpose by documenting some of the work thats gone into the car as I seam to forget things from one day to another...

Last time home I spent in excess of 6 hours taking the bonnet back to bare metal removing some 3-4 mm of filler in the process :shock: , terrible thing to sand as its so soft in the middle. I definitely understand the costs involved in painting a car, mine will never be show quality but at least I know its done from bare steel with first class PPG products. I then towed the car from my mates paint shop to the body shop as I wanted some proper help with adjusting panel gaps and to fabricate the bit of missing outer right sill.

Body guy's progress so far;
- Rear wings has been pressed appart with aid of a hydraulic jack and hammer 'n dolly to give a bit more clearance for the engine lid at the rear most corners, this will all help even out the panel gaps.
- The engine lid was previously fitted with about 5-6 washers on each side between hinge and lid, the hinges has now been bushed to get rid of the excessive play before being straightened/adjusted for good engine lid fit without washers.
- The (new to me) std steel front bumper has beed straightened to make sure minimal amount of filler is needed in the paint prep, car previously had fiber glass RS bumper.
- The bonnet is now straightened up by some shrinking so shouldn't need much filler in the paint prep.

Managed to get this Fri off work so quickly booked a flight to Sweden for 3 days quality time in the garage, this weekend's plan is to;
- Sand blast the right door which has had it's skin removed before returning it to body guy for new skin fitment
- Take left door back to metal and epoxy prime before returning to body guy for gapping
- Take engine lid back to bare metal (blasting edges and sanding the skin) and epoxy prime before returning to body guy for gapping
- Flush oil tank (already blasted and painted in 2k epoxy)
- Flush fuel tank

CLM 2016 is still the target even if it feels a bit tight at the moment :roll:

Has been a good and productive weekend
- Driver door and engine lid now taken back to bare metal, good news is that both had zero rust :-)
- passenger door blasted and prepped for the body guy to repair lower section and fitting the new door skin
- Door internals, locks and winding mechanisms has been cleaned and lubed so should be an easy assembly after paint
- I also had a look at the progress of the body guy, very impressed with the quality of craftsmanship so far!

Once the body guy is done he'll trailer it to the paint shop so no more work should be required from my end until its time for assembly in 2 months or so.

Tom, Gary, thanks! CLM might be a tad optimistic but its still the target...

The car is now with the body guy for sorting a big buckle in the bonnet and setting gaps all around, then its off for prep, before being dismantled yet again for final coat of paint. Then back to body guy for setting gaps again. Its not much I can do to influence the time these steps will take. Once all this is done I plan to assembly the rest over a long weekend or two.
