I made a little extension bracket for my LH lamp fitted to the inside of the bowl at the top. It wouldn't clip over the original and stay in place when you did the screw up at the bottom.

I'm sure there is a way to make them stay on!

Jamie:
Did you get/try the VW ones (seals).

I would also look at the return lip on the chrome rim itself to see if that can be squeezed to gain another 0.5 or 1 mm needed.

Jamie

Your keys are correct. The glove box key was the one retained by you when you hand the driving keys over to your valet or doorman on arrival at your swankey 'do'. This allowed the valet acces to everything except your valuables locked in the glovebox. The glovebox key usually had the black holder and the door/ignition valet key had the red holder.

Mike

Although I had driven the car in the US, I couldn't remember why the car came with two keys and assumed it due to mismatched ignition and door locks. Turns out the other key is for the glovebox (is this normal?).
Mike, I was in the process of writing a reply on the same point but read it as Jamie had tried the glove box key and it would not operate the other locks so here is my reply......

As I understand it cars came with 2 keys. The main key operated all locks including the glove box and the valet key operated all locks except the glove box.

So, assuming you have confirmed that the glove box key does not operate the other locks it is most likely the glove box lock has been replaced at some point. They are possible to rekey. Guidance on how to do that is on Pelican Parts and I am sure has had a mention or two on here. Chance are though you will need parts for the lock to match with your key unless you are very lucky and find you can just swap the internals round - with 4 tumblers in the glove box lock as I recall and 5 options per tumbler the chance of swapping them round are slim. Having said that with the grief you have had for the headlamps you are due some luck.

Best of luck finishing off the build.

Regards
Graeme

Hmm... might have to reinvestigate the keys once I get home. To be honest, I'm not totally bothered about the glovebox, but it'd be nice to have it right.

Headlamps may have to be duct taped in!

I had two keys, both black. It turned out that one would lock the glove-box but not unlock it. I guess it had been copied from the red valet key. My OPC supplied me with a new master from the chassis # for a few quid*.

Put a few more hours in this evening. Then I realised that I hadn't bought an oil filter. Where does one get an oil filter at 8pm on Christmas Eve?

From a friend with a Mk4 Golf, of course. Friend comes over. We fit the new filter and crank the engine. After a while it becomes apparent that I never fitted pump anywhere on the fuel system.

So I dig a little solid-state pump out of my box of car stuff. I suck the fuel through to the bay and we fit the pump there for the time being. Crank crank crank, BANG! Big backfire through the right carb. Crank crank crank crank...

And it splutters into life. Best Christmas present ever.

I'll be doing the 20-minutes-at-2000rpm run-in tomorrow morning. Merry Christmas all :)

Not quite :(

Started the 20-minute burn-in this morning. After 5 minutes of delightful noise, I looked underneath the engine and discovered oil pissing out of the bell housing.

I presume the main seal isn't doing its job. Clue - I fitted it.

Means engine out, gearbox off, flywheel off. God.

On a plus note, NickT's stainless exhaust sounds great.
