70. Paint preparation.



So thanks to Darren we got the shell moved safely from East Sussex to Swindon... I'd call that a pretty safe pass...

and here it is at Darren's ready for the paint stage to start, although there's quite a bit to do before it sees any paint..




As we didn't know what was underneath the old green primer it obviously all had to come off..














Evidence of the original paint was found in various places..





and even a bit of surface rust was found, so very reassuring to know every inch has been stripped back..

The previous application of green primer was, in places, put over bare metal but in other areas directly over the original paint leaving some horrible crud in places, like the gutters, which Darren's team attacked with paint stripper to make absolutely sure .....

Different in Kieron's case as he purchased his car like this but good media blasting is worth every single penny spent on it and only then if the shell is left bare so you can see exactly what your painting over.

When investing this much time, effort and money into a shell the last thing you'd ever want to do is ruin the integrity at the paint stage.......always nice to know exactly what lies beneath your glossy exterior!

72. Epoxy


A major milestone was reached on Thursday. Rich got two lovely coats of epoxy on the shell and this is the first time I've seen it in one colour all over, so I've finally seen the back of that bloody insipid pale green primer.

I was with the guys in the bodyshop the other day stood around Kieron's shell drooling over Barry's handiwork when one the rental guys passed and asked 'is it good?'.....

Now that question always takes me back to a time when I brought my daughter a chocolate ice cream cornet; she must have been 6 or 7 years old at the time. She was oblivious to the world as we walked along, the ice cream had her full attention as she merrily devoured the cornet, absorbed in her task with the chocolate spreading around her face and dripping from her chin.
As I looked down smiling I asked the question ‘is that ice cream good Lucy?’ - without lifting her head or removing her gaze, the reply came in a tone full of warmth, love and devotion…..’better than good!’

The work Barry Carter has put into this shell is immense. As good as it looked when it first arrived, now the shell has been painted you can appreciate even more just how excellent Barry's work is, there not a flaw, any visible joins, or in fact any tell tale signs that car has been through any form of major restoration......it simply looks like a brand new bodyshell that's been dipped at the factory. Truly outstanding

I guess you had to be there and capture the look on my daughters chocolate covered face to really appreciate the sentiment in her reply but when someone asks me if something really special is 'good?'......

.......you know what my answer will be!

Just wanted to say thank you for doing such a great job documenting all the metal work that went into your car. I have a few RUSToration projects ('69 912 & '74 911) and it's so helpful to see how others deal with specific problems and areas. I do not have near the skill as the metal working wonder Barry, (I am a weekend warrior at best) but again, very interesting and inspiring to see what it takes to go to this level...

Fantastic stuff. I can't say that loudly enough!

I'll be following along the rest of the way now!

Hi Ian - on a couple of occasions when I was over two hours into posting an update I managed to miss the 'Low Battery' warning and lost everything and had to start again...yes the air was blue. I found it best not to start too late in the evening as manipulating all those tabs and images was very tiring.

I've looked at your thread on many occasions and am fascinated that you're managing to preserve so much original metal...fantastic work.

Can you post more of your work on the Vincent as you do it?

74. Paint prep continues

I called in to see Darren recently to discuss how I wanted the car finished. As most of you will know Darren has researched extensively how these cars were painted at the factory and as far as I'm concerned I want to take full advantage of that knowledge. So I've decided upon the 'full over spray, as it left the factory version'. Perhaps not to everyone's taste especially for those who want to see bright shiny paint under every carpet, but its exactly what I want. Of course I will have super levels of modern corrosion protection and having spent an hour or so with Rich I just know it's going to be superb.
