Complete driveshafts or refurb with new CV joints?

Post by gridgway »

Just looking at this as I'm going to change the driveshafts on the beast. They've not stood up well to being put back in service. So looking on ECP, the driveshafts seem about £200 each and the CV joints are £80 each. Seems a bit of a no brainer just to get complete new ones. Also where is the best place to get them?
Thanks

I sent mine to Dave Mac prop shafts in Coventry for complete refurbishment and new CV joints. They came back as new, the shafts painted and splines all checked, total cost £236 plus vat.

Well, that's certainly better than buying 4 CV joints and DIY'ing! Did that include couriers there or back?

Hi Graham, I dropped my drive shafts over to them, they are only 40 mins away, if too far I'd recommend you give them a call, I am sure they can oblige and you won't be disappointed. My shafts came back looking brand new, returned greased up with gaskets, ready to fit.

They are a proper engineering company making some hard to source components for Tuthills.

The answer to the CV question is always Dave Mac! I used them as a supplier for various projects I worked on at Prodrive making custom props and driveshafts.

It's in a very special area of Coventry though so enjoy the scenery! :)

we've used them at work a couple of times for one-off prop-shafts and they've always been very good :)

I nearly had a go at taking the driveshafts off today. But the wheel side put me off. The gearbox side was clean as it's been on and off recently. The wheel side had rusty bolts with the hex heads full of crud. Am I right in thinking that it will come off ok if I undo the bolts? It's not one complete unit with a stub axle all the way through the wheel bearing to the wheel?

Graham

And metric, M8?

It will come off ok. Just be really careful not to round the heads of the fixings. Clean them out with a pointy tool then make sure you tap your hex key fully home before trying to undo them. That sickening feeling of the internal hex rounding is all too familiar! :)

Yes, rounding off doesn't seem a good idea which is what put me off really. I assume they are an M8 hex? The clean (gearbox) side had quite a lot of play when I put the bit in.

Should be M8 hex, I guess the heads or the tool might be worn?

Yes, must be worn heads as the allen key I was using to test the fit is brand new (and a proper make!).

Multi splines are used on everything modern so I guess they could have been replaced at some point. They are even worse for rounding if you don't seat them perfectly. Memories of chiselling out many front drive VW fixings come flooding back... :)

Definitely hex not splined.

What I really need is that scissor lift I never bought. Crawling around with the car only up on axle stands is not comfortable!
