These are my wheels:
They are Deep 6 Fuchs. I have two with hearts and two without hearts. It bothers me enough that I'd like to buy another two of either type so I have a matching set. Should I stop being a nob? Should I just get the file out and make them all non-hearts?
The other thing that has been playing on my mind is buying a set of repros to use instead. I don't feel too bad about repro Fuchs for the one reason that they have a safety bead, which the originals do not.
Anyway, with this on my mind, I went to the Volksworld show this weekend to have a look at wheels and paint. Still unsure about what colour to do the car, and still interested in this satin silver idea, I had been experimenting in the kitchen, mixing high metallic silver with black. All I had made so far was a load of shite-looking muddy colours.
So I abandoned it into the bin.
Knowing from past experience that the traffic to the Volksworld show would be absolute murder, I took the bike. This had the added benefit that I couldn't spend money on anything big whilst I was there.
This was the first Porsche I saw. Bit low for my liking, but the paint, trim and overall presentation was pretty spectacular. Lovely!
These repro whateverthefucks were nice. I took this picture to make a mock-up on a shot of my car once I was home. It looked crap, so I won't be ordering a set.
Cheap though.
This 912 was sporting a set of American Racing wheels. I took a picture of the interior for some reason.
I've always been drawn to satin finishes most. This was right up my street:
Loved the simplicity of this:
Dunno what the f*** is going on here. Not relevant. Worth a picture though.
I like the idea of tinted visors. Looked for aircraft ones on eBay a while back, but they were expensive and a bit brown-looking. These were from an early Beetle. I like them, but the angle that the mirror attaches to the roof is all different. Food for thought, though.
One for Darren. I think the guy wanted £100. Seemed like a bit of a deal. Would look great in a 70s Beetle.
Argghhh, I F****** hate Wolfrace slot mags. Here are some in 5x130. No.
This lovely thing was out in the car park:
Beautiful paint, too. I love the way the reflection rolls into the shut-line.
Result of the day for me was a finding a quartz 911 dash clock in the autojumble for £20. Not checked if it's working, but I know the mechanical one I already have isn't, so worth a punt.
And this - in the basement was a company demonstrating vinyl wraps on a Beetle. I had a look through their swatch books of 3M and Hexis vinyls. The satin silvers were unremarkable, but the 3M brushed steel effect vinyl had, very nearly, the reflective qualities of this unicorn paint finish that I have buried in my head.
I just wasn't keen on the texture of the material itself - the fact that you could easily see the grain where it caught the light.
This vinyl from Hexis was also close, but again didn't properly excite me:
The problem is, I don't like wrapped cars. Or rather, I don't really care about wrapped cars. Nasty tat for tasteless footballer oiks and those 30k millionaires you find in the scrubby outskirts of greater metropolitan areas.
I did however find the brushed finish interesting for the reason that it was a look unachievable with paint. Something you couldn't have imagined 10 years ago.
I chatted with the rep on the stand for a while. The Dude was also at the show, so I dragged him down there for a second opinion. He was digging the brushed more than I did. I stored it all in the back of my mind for later.
When I got home, I got on the internet and started looking at wrapped finishes. By 3.45am, after browsing every naffing wrapped car on Google images, I had found it - the one. It's perfect. I'm going to keep quiet about paint finished now - the decision is made (it's not paint). I just really hope it looks as good as I think it might.
