It arrived in the post during the week:

Image

I ordered two versions - one with enough edge for a single flange at the top, and one with material for two at the bottom.

Weight of the top one:

Weight of the bottom one:

Image

I rode over to 83 Engineering and borrowed the bending brake...

Even on the large and very heavy brake, it was hard work bending the 80cm length of 3mm steel. Proper two bloke job, hanging off the end of the lever. Now done, however, both pretty stiff. I'll probably go with the top one as it's that little bit beefier.

Now to weld some tube on the ends so it can be bolted to the engine mounts...

Pretty pleased with this so far - came out looking just as I hoped.

In other news, these arrived today:

Image

Pirelli Cinturato 165s, ordered from Longstone tyres. Beautiful period tread pattern, skinny period width and proportional profile. Just lovely. I've read good things about the way early cars drive on these tyres, so I can't wait to get them on the car.

Image

I believe Longstone are an official DDK advertiser, so here's a link to them on their site:

These are my wheels:

Image

They are Deep 6 Fuchs. I have two with hearts and two without hearts. It bothers me enough that I'd like to buy another two of either type so I have a matching set. Should I stop being a nob? Should I just get the file out and make them all non-hearts?

The other thing that has been playing on my mind is buying a set of repros to use instead. I don't feel too bad about repro Fuchs for the one reason that they have a safety bead, which the originals do not.

Anyway, with this on my mind, I went to the Volksworld show this weekend to have a look at wheels and paint. Still unsure about what colour to do the car, and still interested in this satin silver idea, I had been experimenting in the kitchen, mixing high metallic silver with black. All I had made so far was a load of shite-looking muddy colours.

Image

So I abandoned it into the bin.

Knowing from past experience that the traffic to the Volksworld show would be absolute murder, I took the bike. This had the added benefit that I couldn't spend money on anything big whilst I was there.

This was the first Porsche I saw. Bit low for my liking, but the paint, trim and overall presentation was pretty spectacular. Lovely!

Image

Image

These repro whateverthefucks were nice. I took this picture to make a mock-up on a shot of my car once I was home. It looked crap, so I won't be ordering a set.

Image

Cheap though.

Image

This 912 was sporting a set of American Racing wheels. I took a picture of the interior for some reason.

Image

I've always been drawn to satin finishes most. This was right up my street:

Image

Loved the simplicity of this:

Image

Dunno what the f*** is going on here. Not relevant. Worth a picture though.

Image

Image

I like the idea of tinted visors. Looked for aircraft ones on eBay a while back, but they were expensive and a bit brown-looking. These were from an early Beetle. I like them, but the angle that the mirror attaches to the roof is all different. Food for thought, though.

Image

One for Darren. I think the guy wanted £100. Seemed like a bit of a deal. Would look great in a 70s Beetle.

Image

Argghhh, I F****** hate Wolfrace slot mags. Here are some in 5x130. No.

Image

This lovely thing was out in the car park:

Image

Beautiful paint, too. I love the way the reflection rolls into the shut-line.

Image

Result of the day for me was a finding a quartz 911 dash clock in the autojumble for £20. Not checked if it's working, but I know the mechanical one I already have isn't, so worth a punt.

And this - in the basement was a company demonstrating vinyl wraps on a Beetle. I had a look through their swatch books of 3M and Hexis vinyls. The satin silvers were unremarkable, but the 3M brushed steel effect vinyl had, very nearly, the reflective qualities of this unicorn paint finish that I have buried in my head.

Image

I just wasn't keen on the texture of the material itself - the fact that you could easily see the grain where it caught the light.

This vinyl from Hexis was also close, but again didn't properly excite me:

Image

The problem is, I don't like wrapped cars. Or rather, I don't really care about wrapped cars. Nasty tat for tasteless footballer oiks and those 30k millionaires you find in the scrubby outskirts of greater metropolitan areas.

I did however find the brushed finish interesting for the reason that it was a look unachievable with paint. Something you couldn't have imagined 10 years ago.

I chatted with the rep on the stand for a while. The Dude was also at the show, so I dragged him down there for a second opinion. He was digging the brushed more than I did. I stored it all in the back of my mind for later.

When I got home, I got on the internet and started looking at wrapped finishes. By 3.45am, after browsing every naffing wrapped car on Google images, I had found it - the one. It's perfect. I'm going to keep quiet about paint finished now - the decision is made (it's not paint). I just really hope it looks as good as I think it might.

The wheels are, sadly, copies of the Speedmaster wheels made by Moon Equipment. They are a modern wheel done in the style of Halibrands and I must admit I like them a lot. Wouldn't buy the cheap copies, though – the genuine Moon ones are superb quality.

Jamie it has taken me ages of studying your pictures to understand the difference and now I am stuck with always noticing. If you hadn't said I doubt anyone would seen it but now they all will but personally I think you should stop worrying and just stick it together as fast as you can and drive it.

2 hearts on one side, 2 non-hearts on the other side. You/we can't see both sides at the same time. :cyclops:

Really enjoyed the Volksworld reportage Jamie, made me laugh... but nothing more than the L'il Bugger Shed!

Thanks for posting.

And fwiw, I wouldn't worry about the heart combo & I'd stick them front or back but not the same side. No idea why. But like the L'il Bugger, there doesn't have to be a reason!

BTW L'il Bugger may be a good name for your car?

...I agree, part of the cars history and charm 8) .....plus lots of cars probably had mis-matched wheels at the time of change.

That Lil Bugger would be cool. I could cruise Norfolk, sleep in lay-bys and live like a gypsy

Exactly Jon. I've decided bricks and mortar are overrated. Haven't stayed at mine now for nearly a week. May as well sell it

OK - I'll stop fretting and just fit hearts one side, non-hearts the other, then get the bastardo registered.

It has sort of occurred to me that, if I'm getting this thing wrapped rather than painted, just one last coat of epoxy and I'm ready to start putting it back together.

I'm back in the zone with the bodywork again. This evening Nathan (nrc914) stopped-by on the way home from work to check out the chaos. I was mid-way through cutting the door shuts back out the filler, covered in much dust.

Anyway, the gaps are all now 4mm and looking very tasty. Not sure how sharp the panel edges have to be - at the moment, they're very sharp. I expect someone can tell me.

I think I am going to stop the bodywork now - skip the high-build primer stage. There won't be any benefit to the finish of the wrap, so a waste of time. Also, the high-build is nasty isocyanate stuff - no point exposing myself to that unnecessarily.

By the time I grow up and realise the car has to be Sand Beige, I expect it will have picked-up a few dents and will need prepping again anyway. I can do the high-build then.

In other news, I found out this evening that the vinyl that I have (had?) my heart set on is 5x the price of standard 3M vinyl. The price for a standard wrap is around £1300. The total cost to fit the vinyl I really like - £4500. If it was paint, I'd do it, but I don't fancy spending that much on some plastic film. Unless I can find an alternative, I guess it's back to the drawing board...

PS, I'm not calling my car Lil' Bugger.

OK, perhaps not. That's only me (now that I have become a doorgap / paint reflection saddo). :(
