Re: covering steering wheels
Just picked up my 911 SC wheel from Mr Parr this morning. Leather was in decent shape but the stitching had come away in a few places. He has done a lovely job of re-stitching the wheel and sorting out a few dodgy repairs.
Thanks Jonathan - wonderful job, great to have people with your skills around.

Re: covering steering wheels
Just wanted to say a huge thanks to Jonathan.
I shipped off two very tatty and tired steering wheels, the car is still only just mounted on the jig, so priorities are probably not get the wheel sorted.
Delighted with the results.
I still haven't decided which will go on my car, more than likely I will stick with the original.
I have tried for sometime to source an original vintage MOMO, astronomical prices and scarcity being the biggest obstacle. This one was in really poor shape, the cover was totally perished and the Jackie Stewart signature was barely visible. Jonathan sourced a new script and reapplied the signature, the wheel still has some signs of wear / abuse on the metal which I like, but the leather is now beautifully soft and by all accounts should be good for another 40 odd years (either on a car or my wall).
Top class.
I know its sad but here are some pictures. Apologies but I was messing about with light and different techniques, trying to learn.

Re: covering steering wheels
Thought I would post this update as one of my most recent works has been the most involved, altogether a much more detailed restoration, so this ones got quite a few images of the process....
John will cover it in his own car thread for his car known as LYY 911D, but the brief was to save as much as possible of the original wheel
The original condition was pretty poor but time and patience can rectify most things
When I dismantled the horn push the original foam insert for the leather crest was just powder, so I drew a new 3D negative of the void inside the push and had a new male form 3D printed, which was bonded into the leather
The original die cast metal texture on the horn rims were also badly pitted, so careful hand sanding and filing restored the delicate fins prior to repainting
The chrome ring was heavily pitted but really fragile, so I hand prepared the surface for the chrome platers to minimise the amount of machine polishing, the end results was perfect
An early idea to try a graft new leather onto the old wasn't feasible....so order to be able to keep the 40+ year patina.....I sourced a similar vintage wheel and transplant the leather...not easy as the S wheels of 420mm are very rare
A donor was sourced in lovely condition, almost the same age as the original, once the leather was carefully removed it was reinstated onto the original wheel..always a bit of a worry as the strength of the original leather is unpredictable
Last process was to recover the donor wheel with a new smooth leather skin
All in all a satisfying job, nice to be able to restore as much as possible
thanks for looking
regards

Re: covering steering wheels
Excellent work Jonathan - great to see this type of ('sympathetic') approach & good to know that there's someone who's prepared to undertake such jobs.

Re: covering steering wheels
Thanks Jon,
Received my wheel today and WOW, what a difference to say I'm pleased is an understatement! Even the packaging was a work of art!
Happy to recommend you to one and all.
