Hi Adam
No need to lable the wiring, take some photos of the conections and then pull it out. You will follow the wiring diagram when replacing it.
Kind Regards

Re: Oh yes another 1973 rhd 2.4E
A long time since Ive been on so an update required I think
Still not got anywhere with the drivers seat, current thinking is to refurb the two I have and keep looking for a drivers seat. In the end its part of the cars past and feels ok so easy choice. If anyone knows of a conversion or falls upon a drivers seat please let me know

Tricky decision but given the 60-80 hours/week I work, distant location of the usual ddk specialists all around the country I decided on leaving the engine department to Redline Racing in Middlesbrough....just 8 miles from home. It was Redline that setup my engine before CLM and they did a terrific job of that!!! The engine rebuild will be done side by side with a genuine 2.7RS along with a 2.7RS replica along with their usual bread and butter 997 and 991 GT3's. Engine rebuilds of the classics are done by a guy who used to prepare 2.7RS engines back in the day so has a great pedigree!!

Gave them all the suspension/metal work too to get a 'refurb'...and turned it into this....

They are fitting all new bushes/rubber as standard as in the end on CLM trip I was pleased with the road handling of the car once I got used to the 40yr old characteristics

All nuts and bolts have been sent away for refurb too, as you can see everything I removed was labelled and placed in bags. Just hope they come back in similar familiarity....

An interesting 'strengthening' of the front gearbox mounting??

Flywheel looking seriously scored. Being an ex hill climb car I'm sure there are going to be lots of suprises coming up once they open up the engine....
With regards to bodywork, an update by Barry has moved slightly to end of 2015 so gives me plenty of time to sort the drivers seat. Thinking of getting the car blasted after xmas to reveal the true extent and to allow plenty of time to build up a store of new panels. Its quite obvious I need pretty much everything including full floor pan and rear quarters.... Does anyone know where I can source these parts please??

Hi Adam-
Best bet for panels is to get a list from Barry of what you need - probably after blasting - he will give you all the part numbers too I think.
I'd then go for genuine Porsche, so you'll get them from your local dealer - Although the Glasgow OPC has a good rep for helping with classics. Porsche panels are usually more expensive than the pattern parts (ie the replicas) but they tend to fit better, so what you shell out for in the panels, you tend to save in hours as Barry has to do less fettling to get them to fit.
I also found out that the parts guys at Porsche dealerships all have 'classic' targets, so they're well into helping you out, it's worth building a partnership with one of them, so that they will become familiar with your project - you might even get some discount off them for bulk buying.
Also, you'll need a copy of PET, the parts PDF if you don't have one already - it takes a bit of getting your head around to start with, but once you're in it, it becomes a really useful helper - especially when you're ordering parts
Great to see the suspension stuff too - it's looking good. And sounds like your engine builder will be great if he's been on the aircooled stuff for a while.

Re: Oh yes another 1973 rhd 2.4E
Well, its been a while.
Many thanks for the advice on panels. I've spoken to Adam at OPC Bolton who has been extremely helpful and so far have bought the front wings to start the mountain of panels I'm going to need.
Work has just been manic and not been able to venture in the garage.... However popped into Redline and they have opened up the engine and gearbox which as predicted revealed a few suprises!

Understandable as to why the gearbox was a battle at times...

Generally speaking "not too bad considering it was a hill climb car". Full set of bearings should do the trick along with a new crown wheel and pinion. (If anyone knows of a good second hand one please drop me a line). First gear has a slight bit of damage but recommended to refit but again if anyone knows of a good second hand one...?
Engine "could have been worse......"
Crank is in excellent condition,

need a new cam, pistons are only just within tolerence so whilst its in bits i have bought a set of new Marle pistons and barrels due in next week. Bit gutted to be honest as car goes really well and no oil burn but whilst on this journey it will be worth it. Thought about just re-ringing the pistons but decided to keep them as spares but bite the bullet....
Other parts are cleaning up well

Engine and gearbox being fitted with all standard parts as feel the car is plenty fast enough. I originally wanted the fastest engine possible but the turbo filled that gap and just want to recreate the original feel of the car with a couple of suspension tweaks

Nice call on the pistons and barrels. Feels bad on the wallet - but great when it's back in the car. Good spend.

Not a good spend as far as the wife is concerned!!! The car was my 40th present last year and its her 40th this year... "Why are you still getting 40th birthday presents a year later...!!!". The potentially spiralling costs are becoming quite apparent!! At one point I was getting frustrated at the slow speed of it all and couldnt understand why it would take so long.... HOW NAIVE!!!!

Re: Oh yes another 1973 rhd 2.4E
Stick with it - it is sooooo worth it. I felt the same, then I changed my approach / expectations - it's a hoary old cliché but it's the journey not the destination. I really missed the project once it was done, there's something very satisfying about scoring some new lenses or a stupid piece of piping or fixing a light cluster yourself.
And as for naïve...well, you don't know what you don't know when you start all of this - but it is quite an eye opener when you see what people have to go through to get these things back to looking amazing.
Let me know if you want to chat.

Re: Oh yes another 1973 rhd 2.4E
A question to put out there, the damage to my cam was apparently attributed to my oil pump which is quite 'stiff' when you spin manually (oil starvation). Can these get refurbed or is it a matter of replacing? If so any ideas?
On my wanted add it was suggested a later model pump?

Put it in the bin. I feel your pain. A four rib SC pump is the accepted upgrade. About £700 !

Thanks for the info. Is that new (OPC) or second hand? (still cant get my head round the pricing of these things...) Also Im not fitting external oil cooler as want to keep the car standard so is the 'four rib' SC pump still of choice?

Rich is right - if you haven't got a deadlines then enjoy each bit and let it take as long as it takes. A point of frustration for me was that my deadline meant it was hard to enjoy parts of the work that would have been more fun if I could have taken my time.
Too much time in the garage can put a strain on the relationship though so it's worth trying to balance everything out for longer term harmony

That's new. Personally i wouldn't fit a used pump on my engine, but that's just me.
Agree, some Porsche parts are crazy money.

Going into my 2.2 S rebuild is part no 9110700206 £685.10. Plus vat. Happy to send you the estimate if you wish, though, it will frighten you and is bespoke to my engine, no one rebuild is the same from a parts perspective, but there is common ground in the time and labour and sensible 'standard' changes
