Collected my gearbox housing from Ben Coles today, along with another to send up to Mike B.

Ben has machined the end plate to take his RS magnesium oil pump housing, pump gears and spray bar kit….mine is on the left, items on the right are the RSR type to work in conjunction with an external oil cooler...

Ben has sold a few of these lately and was in the process of making a new batch….amazing how simple the jigs are….

…braze welded and finished in BZP the end result is top quality perfect reproductions of original items…..

...the 226mm small fan housing was recently purchased from Crawford Composites in the States, this'll be black anodised and possibly painted to give the correct dark chromate look.

I understand the small fan housing isn't designed to work with a normal road going Behr engine oil cooler so the replacement racing oil filter was a no brainer!

I've decided that I hate restorations……they take too long, cost too much and consume your life in a big, big way!……

…..although they're punctuated by true periods of elation, the angst, guilt and despair you go through are difficult to absorb…..

….only the end result and 'driving' make the pain worthwhile…..for me anyway.

So to re-claim my life, this is THE plan…..

…..paint finished November……Gary Cook rebuild from December…..engine and gearbox fit March…...driving late Spring :)

I have all my ducks lined up, what could possibly go wrong! :?

…one of the things that could have held things up was this…..

….I've been asked a couple of times about my Ben Coles reproduction MM dizzy and whether they'd fit early cases?…I had no idea they wouldn't, I guess you never stop learning and as this photo shows MM distributors evolved over time….

Image

….a great thing with early Porsche enthusiasts is the sharing of knowledge and a big thanks to Wilfrid for highlighting the differences between early and late Magneti Marelli twin spark distributors.

The later RSR type distributors have a wider input shaft and although I'd have happily machined my case to accept this, the additional cast bracket just doesn't work….I understand these have been machined off by others in the past to get the later type dizzy to fit…..

….I mentioned the earlier distributors to Ben, 'not a problem' he said, 'others have enquired about these as well so I'll produce them and add them to my product range'……I guess easy when you know how!

So, yesterday I dropped off an original early distributor borrowed from a friend for Ben to copy…..

Image

….seen here with a later casting…

Image

…..and in a couple of weeks I'll have a perfect reproduction early Magneti Marelli distributor which Ben will swap with my later type….

...problem solved….simples! :P

Ratios, ratios, ratios! :? ….

Darren65 wrote:how do you find your ratios?……
This is something you should do in conjunction with your engine/gearbox builder, he should have a programme to give you
your ratios dependent on the final drive and wheel size. But most important is the rev drop between gears, this is how you
finally select your ratios so as to minimise that rev drop and keep the engine on cam.

See the red line in the graph below, that's what your trying to achieve, a smooth progressive transition up through the box.

Helpful advice from Mike Moore above and something I have gone through with both Mike Bainbridge and Nick Fulljames.

The idea of changing ratios came about when splitting my gearbox with Mike highlighting that I needed to change 2nd and 4th gears. Initially I suggested I wanted to retain the other 3 gears to reduce costs however I've since been persuaded that I really should also change 3rd to better spread the power curve.

Well, I've read the Sports Purpose manual, had helpful suggestions both here and on the Early 911S Registry and listened to the experts; lots of fun choosing, ultimately it's all down to your intended use and think the following should work well for me…

1st 11:35 AZ
2nd 17:35 GZ
3rd 21:29 LT
4th 25:26 PQ
5th 29:22 TM

Just waiting to hear back from Matt Monson at GT Gears and then on to the rebuild.

Yes, heat is involved - the temperature required is dependent on the material you're casting but aluminium alloys typically melt at ~450-700 degrees Celsius

Sorry for the thread hijack Darren !
