What's left to do now ?

Main focus at the moment is trying to sort out a permanent effective (& ideally period-correct) air filtration system for the Webers.

The combination of 'tall' manifolds & insulating spacers plus tall auxillary venturis & 77mm trumpets means that clearance for air filters is limited - especially on the right side due to the staggered arrangement of the Webers.

However, I'm hopeful of solving the problem & being able to use some period air filters.

And how easy would it be to turn it into a daily smoker !!

The biggest problem if you wanted to use the car on a daily basis - in town at least - would be the door height.

On the original 4-cam 904's (which is the body style my car utilises) the doors extended down into the sills which means the bottom of the doors is below Kerb height making 'conventional' street parking impossible. The problem is exarcerbated by LHD & the limited amount that the sliding windows open - making entering/exiting any car parks, etc with barrier-controlled entrances interesting !

If you never park in town and put in a cup holder it would be perfect as a daily !

As mentioned above, I'm still messing about trying to work out a suitable air filter system for my 904 so, for occasions when I'm running open trumpets, I made up a cheap set of covers :








- total cost was less than £5 ...

Once I've got a suitable (period-looking) air filter set-up, the plan is to get it on a rolling road & see what the effects on the power delivery are for various configurations: -

- std Weber open trumpets
- alloy trumpets with domed mesh
- as above but fitted with foam 'sock' filters
- with period air filters

- also megaphones vs 'street' exhaust.

We got more from my PMO/3.2 on Bob's rollers without any filters and re-packable silencers (103 dB). I think it was about 5 bhp...

I've never run the car open headers due to track restrictions.
In a run up the hills I never noticed a better engine output without filters, infact, my best times on the 3 Midland hills are with the engine fitted with clean K&N 911 filters (rain shield type), same silencers.

I'm very happy with my chosen ratios Darren - they seem to compliment the engine characteristics perfectly.

how do you find your ratios?……

This is something you should do in conjunction with your engine/gearbox builder, he should have a programme to give you
your ratios dependent on the final drive and wheel size. But most important is the rev drop between gears, this is how you
finally select your ratios so as to minimise that rev drop and keep the engine on cam.

See the red line in the graph below, that's what your trying to achieve, a smooth progressive transition up through the box.

Thinking about gear sets I remembered the photo I had of Andy's ratio plate….a very cool detail I plan to shamelessly copy!

This thread needed a bump to the top anyway…..should be made a sticky as an all time classic build (along with Mr Moore's of course).

I am on the long list of people who would have loved to have been able to afford that Andy. It would be a win-win, as it will retain value and only appreciate with the little bit of patina that hard use would give it.

As it's relatively quiet on the forum at the moment I thought I'd wind up my old thread by posting a couple of pictures from the Classic & Sports Car magazine shoot that took place at Goodwood shortly before I put the car up for sale.

The weather conditions on the allotted day were atrocious with torrential rain of biblical proportions resulting in huge puddles on the track & very poor visibility.

The idea for the proposed article & photoshoot was a comparison between a selection of '60's sports racing replicas - originally planned to comprise six cars but 2 dropped out due to the weather conditions.

In the end the 4 cars were an aluminium-bodied Hawk 289 Cobra, GT40, Ferrari 250 SWB & my 904.

Unfortunately the final article left a lot to be desired - certainly in relation to my car - with many errors, mis-quotes & inaccuracies (which was especially annoying since I'd proof-read/rewritten the section on my car, only for the original version to be substituted/printed by mistake !).

The article in general I thought was weak on all the cars.

Looking at the '4 cars' pic the GT40 and Andy's 904 are just the most fabulous pair to have in your dream garage I can 'dream' of!

The 904 is in the same mould as Mike's RSR and Darren's Hot Rod 911, all cars that simply look right.
(so does that GT40, school boy dream)

Absolutely, but the 250 SWB is right up there for me too
