993 + ???
Steve , my modded turbo was arguably far too fast for the road , the csl is slower but more fun / playful.
Of course, the 1st time in 23 Years I get caught for speeding and it's in the csl in middle of nowhere on a moorland road
... The kind of road it's made for

Re: 993 + ???
Thanks James.
The owner of ML has offered me a drive in the CSL so might have to take him up on it. Would make an interesting comparison.
Sorry to hear of speeding woes. Hopefully you weren't too far over the limit and will qualify for a speed awareness course?
I've only been nicked for speeding once - fortunately they offered the SA course - and, ironically, I was driving the slowest car I'd ever driven (356B cab) and was on my way to the Festival of Speed.

Re: 993 + ???
2mph below a court appointment
With the CSL, the steering can intiially feel a bit numb compared to a GT3 etc on the road, but on the track the steering felt wonderful. Its also a car that you have & feel more movement through the rear of the car , do drive it with sport button on , traction off ( or m-sprt mode if you want a halfway house) and gearbox to S5 or S6. Do NOT lift for upshifts, foot to the floor for every shift .. if you lift or are a pussy with the shifting the gearbox soon learns this & you end up with a kind of clutch slur . Changes should be quick & brutal, to the point where you think the rear axle is being ripped out of the car. It rides firm, but is stil compliant enough to be a great B-road blaster. I use mine for the school run too , boot ful of school bags, sports kits etc and plenty of space for the kids.
My wife hates it though !

Re: 993 + ???
Wise CSL advice there.
I grew to love the steering. The front end is very hard to unstick, even in the wet, and the back would always move first. Overall it gave a fantastic pointy but balanced feel - I found that, although there's not tons of feel, there was still tons of confidence in the front end because the grip was always there.
The seats (some kind of Recaro pole position IIRC) are really skinny, so there is a surprising amount of room in the back. For the same reason my wife loved it - she said they were the best seats of any car I've ever had.
Are we far enough off topic now?

Re: 993 + ???
Welcome,
Great cars and lots of sensible chat. If you apply the same thinking to buying an early car, reading, watching, waiting etc then you will end up with the right car. There is a VERY tempting car for sale just now if you want a sports purpose vehicle rather than complete originality with no work needed and in the best colour. Not cheap.
Your 993 is familiar looking. I'm sure I saw it for sale on piston heads a year or two ago (knowing my memory it's probably 4) possibly in the Kent or Sussex area if I remember, far to far away for me to view but I do remember it was a nice looking car, the wheels were the same anyway and I'm sure the interior was tan. Could that be your car? Warming to the look of the 993 even though I'm strictly an early 911 guy after a brief flirt with a 996T which was too fast for me. (sorry Steve, I know I should man-up).
All the best finding your car and enjoy Ddk.
Regards
Mike

Hi Mike, and thanks for the welcome.

... and I bought the BBSes.
Sounds nice though!
Is Turkis the best colour? Or do you mean Gulf?210bhp wrote: There is a VERY tempting car for sale just now if you want a sports purpose vehicle rather than complete originality with no work needed and in the best colour. Not cheap.
No, not mine. My interior looks like this (not tan):210bhp wrote: Could that be your car?

Richard
No,
The best colour is tangerine, mmmm or maybe viper green, or possibly chartreuse, or even maybe light yellow, no wait a minute leaf green is nice, then there's Bahia red, and then aubergine wow, signal yellow is cool and you can't overlook signal orange, or maybe light ivory is the most understated, or there's Irish green, nice, or you might find Gemini appealing, or gulf blue, then you can't discount the marmite colours of sepia and olive, gulf orange is rare and nice, and ,yes, turkis and of course burgundy look stunning................. Damn, they are all great, but the one I was thinking of was tangerine.

There were some beautiful 60s+70s colours, weren't there? Makes me laugh to see an Audi brochure these days. 50 shades of grey!
Think I know the car you mean. Jeff Gamroth engine build? If so - I like it but I think I'm going slightly more original (in some ways, not so much in others...). Cryptic comment.
I'm slightly further down the road to a car than my newbie post date suggests - have been lurking and pursuing cars for several months now.

Yes, that's the car i was thinking of Richard.
Are you preferring a 64-68 swb or a 69-73 lwb or a post 73 IB car? Rhd or lhd?

I'd prefer to be driving slower in an older car than faster in a newer one, believe me (but that's where I'm at).210bhp wrote:...sorry Steve, I know I should man-up.

Hi Mike,210bhp wrote: Are you preferring a 64-68 swb or a 69-73 lwb or a post 73 IB car? Rhd or lhd?
I could answer that with an essay, having spent really many months deliberating.
The decision process is not helped by the fact that I never met a Porsche I didn't like...
In short, bearing in mind I have modern-ish (993) and very modern very fast but quite boring (M5) in the garage.
1) I will almost certainly end up with more than one early car. So we are talking about Car 1. Car 2 will probably be a very early wooden dash car, mainly because it's a lovely antique (not so much for the driving experience).
2) Car 1 is primarily to drive, when an involving driving experience is the main thing. Meaning driving for the sake of a drive, driving somewhere fun, driving on a track. Improving how I drive.
3) I don't care much about matching numbers (although need to keep an eye on resale value should I ever move on). But the car should offer an authentic version of the driving experience when it was new. And the aesthetics need to be properly period. So no hot rods with huge, later engines. No backdates from IB cars - personally I love IB cars too, and think they should be restored as-is.
4) I do care about handling
5) I don't care much about outright speed, as long as it's fast enough to be interesting.
6) RHD preferred
Short answer: probably 69-73 lwb, ideally RHD.
I should probably say now that I think I have found such a car and am well on the way to a purchase, so be gentle if you're going to say this is idiotic!
Cheers, Richard.
