RSR (now '65 2.0l) Race Car Project

I've been away twice on business so progress has been frustrating slow over the last 10 days - managed to get the fuel rails fitted neatly on the rear cross member, we're feeding the fuel from this end rather than from the fan side of the engine where it was on the original '65 cars. Note the FIA refuelling system - a little bit of work to do on the throttle linkage to make everything line up the way I want.



Wiring is 80% finished with now getting the gauges finished - just the turn signal and wiper mechanisms to fit and a few other bits and pieces and we'll be close to firing it up - once I'm happy that the car runs and the loom won't melt then all the wiring can be tidied up. The empty gauge hole is for a cold air feed - not normally used in early race cars.

Coming on well this week with most of the wiring no completed - going to fill engine and transmission with oil tomorrow, flush the fuel tank, lines and carbs with petrol and get ready to fire it up over the weekend. The wiring has been slow - just so much to do! We've also spent hours getting the steering rack sorted and fitting the momo boss and quick release hub - nothing fits straight out of the box.

Any Idea where I'd find a set of 6" Fuchs. I had tons of them 10 yrs ago when we were racing in the Irish Porsche Open Series ?

Hi Dave - not sure who would have a full set - ebay.co.uk and ebay.de are the best resources. Have you tried Alan Kessie or any of the other lads? Ill keep an eye out but they're getting rare and expensive. The Braid wheels are good and worth a look ( braid.es ) not cheap either but have the benefit of being new.

It's been a productive week with the rebuild with many of the major elements now completed - the big news is that we've now got the engine running - I hope the link to the video works below??

Engine started after a bit of fiddling - we need to set the timing and look at jetting before taking it to a rolling road to set it up properly. Next week should see the car driving again!

Yes is eligible for Spa and Old timer GP and would like to race at Spa next year all being well and other European races, I'll do a few races at Mondello and Kirkistown this year to get the car sorted.

Most of the major work is one but the list of snags increases! We're provisionally booked to go a rolling road this week - probably Friday - to set up the carbs and ignition timing. We spent at least 4 hours getting the carbs balanced to a point where it ran fairly well but have obviously no idea of how well its going to run under load and across the rev range and where it's going to produce peak power and torque - we will see.

Wiring - still a few of the gauges need attention as not working - not sure if faulty sensors or instruments (or mismatch) but will work through this until everything is as it should be. Really want oil pressure working properly as you can appreciate.

Internally we need to make new seat supports from the dimensions we have from the mock up - then fit safety harness. Door cards along with door straps etc all still need to be made. Next to fit are the gear lever / handbrake lever and also decided to fit a handle throttle to the hand brake - not sure if these were on the 65 cars - but a useful function for cold starting.

Fuel lines need a bit of a tweak to finish off esp in the front compartment but a few hours should do that.

Bodywork - nearly all there and hope to fit the front bonnet and refit the front glass tomorrow or Wednesday. Rear engine lid fitted and glass back in - looking pretty!

Once we've been to the rolling road then we'll corner weight the car ready to go testing in early April. There is a Irish Historic Race at Mondello - mid April - that is our target but expect that it might not be all plain sailing to be ready for then - going to try though.

Another pic of the rear of the car - engine lid straps and decals fitted. New "cheapie" wheels with Avon race tyres put on - going to set the wheel tracking tomorrow as need it done before going to the rolling road. I now have a full set of 5.5 x 15" fuchs and they're off being painted and should be ready next week.

No pics of the front as finishing off fuel lines (a fuel pump packed in earlier in the week!) and still getting the gauges all working - think we'll have the front finished tomorrow night and bonnet fitted along with front glass.

As usual work seems to be getting in the way of finishing the car but back at it now and will have the car ready for a car show this weekend in Belfast - Dubshed - a VW and VAG show. This year Porsche's are welcome and a providing a special display feature!!

Work completed so far this week include all wiring finished, all glass in, all linkages setup and working - pretty much ready to roll. I was dong loads of little small jobs tidying up wiring and cables ready for the bonnet to be fitted tomorrow. Still have lots of little things needing doing but nothing that's going to hold testing up. Once the show is over then it's over to the dyno to get the carbs setup properly. It just takes forever to do a rebuild as all you guys who have restored a car know. I'm keen to see how the car performs and more importantly how it handles.

I'll post some pics of the car from the show on Sunday.

Car finished!!!!

We'll be moving forwards with the dyno this week and testing next week. Still a few snags needing sorted but I now consider the car finished.

I took the car to Dubshed - a VW/VAG car show - car was well received - loads of pics below. I know the wheels look wrong - they're just cheap copies that will do for racing and the badges/decals are incorrect for the year but that's the way I want the car to look.
