Oil choice for 915 box with LSD?

Post by MT »

One thing I remember I forgot  was to change the oil in the gearbox on my 72E restoration before re-fitting it.

I used EP90/SAE 90 in the 901 box (no LSD) in the 66 swb, but I know I've read the advice is different for a box with LSD, so what's the options please?

I have no idea of the make of the LSD, if that matters. All I have checked is that the torque setting is good.

Thanks

This one

or the automatic box fluid?

or Swepco 201 that seems to be THE OIL in the US? I find Berlyn are a UK distributor

Just in case it helps Canford Classics are a UK dealer for Swepco oils and have engine and gear oil in stock.

Mick,

Mike Bainbridge fitted a ZF diff when he rebuilt my gearbox....what a shocker that was, sounded like it was full of marbles!

After 700 miles and a bit of time doing figure of 8's in the Tesco car park I changed the gearbox oil using Castrol B373 Racing Gear Oil (suitable for plate type LSD).......excellent oil and what a transformation! :P

After the service you can hardly hear the diff plates, super smooth and quiet and the gear change feels as sweet as could be......wonderful gearboxes these 915's!

Cheers,

Thanks Darren - I like personal experience, and have had good experience with Castrol oils over the years so I think I'll give it a go…… it also works out at half the cost per litre to Swepco, and you can get it by the litre. Did Mr. B recommend it?

I also have the Castrol B373. Put it in after two changes of ordinary cheapo EP 90 from my local factors. Don't notice any difference.......might try swepco its blue and I like blue. My diff's a gripper and is noisy full stop.

Hi

I think there is a lot of hype about swepco but I am not sure if its better than anything else. It does leave colourfull little marks on your garage floor.

Like Darren I was a little shocked about the noise from my ZF LSD but after a few miles its now very quite.

Kind Regards

OK B373 this time. Might try swepco as the next change to see if there's any difference.

Thanks to all for input. Great help as usual. Much appreciated.

From memory I think the recommendation from both Mike and Nick was just something good quality and the grade…I did ask first before using and was given the thumbs up…..

…my one and only experience so no expert however the difference really was night and day!

I won't be changing :)
