1973 2.4E Restoration

Car came in for its running in service today….



…and also for a couple of finishing items…..



…initially I'd opted to refurb my left heat exchanger as it was very useable and only replace the right side….



…the problem here was there was no attachment from the heat exchanger for the pipe to airbox to connect to and air was being drawn directly from an open ended pipe just above the heat exchanger. I think previously the correct SSI heat exchangers were not available as I've seen a number of cars configured this way. These are now available since Dansk took over SSI (unfortunately only in pairs) and even the correct engine tin ware is available directly from Porsche…



….much neater and factory correct….



…quite impressed with these new striker catches ordered from Stoddard, previously mine were black 993 items being the earliest available from Porsche….never used Stoddard before and found them very efficient….



…now I can photograph my interior without having to make sure the door shuts are blocked from view! ….



…followed by a trip to Redtek for Nick to check everything is in order and to notch the timing back one degree...the car is running flawlessly and loosening up nicely.

Now all I need is my paint tag plate, currently being expertly stamped by a suitably qualified eminent engineer and a set of Coco mats being collected tomorrow (thanks Derek) and I'm all set for the POB tour!

Next stop Stuttgart!

Well if at first you don't succeed…….

……original item (from the Mongrel), new Porsche plate and a reproduction item…..



…I would have used the Porsche item although noticed the font is miles off, repro item looks far more authtentic…..expertly punched by John Milburn (cheers buddy ) with correct stamps and the all important flat top '3' digit, it now looks the part and being LHD I can stop fretting every time I open the drivers door! …..



Please excuse the dirt on the a-post but then it is a used car now!

Next call the rolling road and dyno results and then I can pretty much put this thread to bed.

Finally I can conclude this thread ….

Bar a few improvements I'll make as time goes by, the car has been finished for a little while now…..all, expect that is, for final engine set up ….

The car went in to Redtek yesterday for a full service and check and today we booked a rolling road session to tweak the engine to perfection….



…Nick is now using a local rolling road to test and tweak his engine builds and after the car was securely strapped in place…..



…it was time to get this baby rolling….



Pretty scary seeing, and hearing, your car hit 115MPH whilst strapped down in front of you ..…noise is fabulous, check it out on this video link..…

…after an initial run the car produced a very respectable 175BHP with 165lb ft of torque, up from the standard quoted 2.4E figures of 165BHP and 152lb ft of torque respectively…..…that was nice ….



….however, after some fettling and tweaking by Nick we managed this….



…191BHP with a whopping 176 lb ft of torque and all from a modest, pretty much standard E spec engine…awesome! ….



….and then, on what was a bright and sunny day, I headed home (cross-country of course) with the car singing, screaming and performing faultlessly as it bobbed and bounced and danced its way through the country bends as I did my best to thrash the arse off it!…..absolute bliss!

My first drive of an early 911 was pretty intense….if had been as good as it was today it would have blown my mind!

A final thank you, here at least, for all the kind words, help and support I've received along the way….as I parked up on my drive and took the latest of many, many photographs, I couldn't help thinking….

Darren, do you know what Nick did to improve the figures whilst on the rolling road, presumably settings to the pump and timing?

Just minor adjustments to the pump Jon, he mentioned if we removed the cold start housing and ran it a little leaner we could have probably got it register 200BHP! ...although that would have been cheating a bit and not real world usable power so in the end the car was set for the optimum balance......it's pulling gorgeously and super smooth

Well that would be nice and with the tale regarding previous owners/history etc there's a tale to be told......although the car's not looking quite as pristine as when it left the showroom it's running as sweet as can be........anyone want to try it?
