I love the spec sheet Darren. Pretty much what i'd do.

The only thing I would say is that to do this "Custom aluminium through horn grill ducting to channel cooling" correctly is going to be quite a lot of work and will give you zero benefit in real terms.

You're probably right Jason although I wasn't planning on being too fancy and have a couple of ideas for brake and cabin cooling……I saw something similar on a race car which looked quite cool, if it proves too difficult I'll bin it!

You win some, you lose some!......

....I guess the winning (certainly for many) would be actually finding a sensibly priced 911 project to start with......and then I shouldn't forget the fact it's a genuine 1972 model RHD car.....plus I suppose there was the complete 2.2S lump in the back!......without doubt all positives! ...

....the losing is that this has proved to be a pig of a shell that has had to be fought, kicking and screaming back to life, everything that could be awkward, has been awkward........not something I should have, or was in a position to take on......but then the lust is great!

The real winning with this project is having Barry Carter in my corner.......not only will the shell end up being as sweet as they come, he's also being very, very fair and a real gentleman......the good news is that the end is now in sight and as ever his work is exceptional....

...from the last update......the frame of the car was carefully braced and the old roof removed...



...fortunately what was underneath was solid and rot free...



...however the new rear wings fitted previously weren't done terribly well...



...pretty much the same and not so lucky with nearly every seam and flange on the car which have had to be removed, repaired, fabricated and welded in....of the fourteen feet or so of rear quarter flanges, all bar a couple of feet have been replaced! ....





...rather than weld in the new roof like some, Barry chose to peel back the gutter seams and reform them....the new roof now looks prefect...



....as do the gutter rails ....

I thought this car was a similar prospect to my 2.4E…..how wrong was I …once you're in though, you're in!!!

One thing I have learnt is that it's better to start with car as unrestored as possible…..they're all rusty and that has to be dealt with but getting past previous bodges is just another balls ache!

Well, we're saving as much of the original car as possible……chassis leg was worth saving, repair using 18 gauge steel (stronger than the original)…



…and the scrap parts bin is quite small really…



…scary to think that each of those small scraps of metal have been re-fabricated, stitched and welded in!…….no wonder we're into a 500 hour plus body rebuild!

A lot of bracing goes into the rebuild to ensure it all goes back together exactly as it should…







…as well as a number of crude, but highly effective, special tools and measuring gauges..



…and every time any section is being fitted and welded in that stops the car twisting on the road, inner sills, roof etc. an engineers level is used to check that the jig is perfectly flat…

The car being what it is, there could be an argument to skip some of the detail and save on time spent….for me though it's a 72 shell and deserves to look like one…

…so all is being correctly back dated….

…although not being used for now, good to see Barry's remembered to re-fit the heat tubes…might need those! …

…Barry is now well on the way to fitting the OS front inner wing and in just a few weeks he'll be onto the fun stuff….

Better get the current 911 in the bodyshop finished so we're ready for this one!

That is so true Darren. The only times I've really considered giving up on a restoration is when trying to un-peel 3 layers of previous bodging. Getting the roll cages mounts out of the E was a pain as well. I cringe when I read some of the adverts for 'part completed restoration' or 'metalwork almost complete' ....... because looking at some of the accompanying photos it looks like a lot of unpicking and doing again.

Just so good to see this stuff, thank for taking all the time to post the pics, superb.

Barry's part in all this is a wonder to me, such skill and precision and each shell seems JUST a little bit different in surgery than the previous one, and the one before that etc.

500 hours is boggling too, but how good will it be!!

Unpicking old MoT repairs is a pain but when I cut my front tank support out in 1988 (the car was only 15 years old then) the rust would rival yours, and it had two GTX can /pop rivet repairs even then.

I actually did not cut it out, I jumped down on it from a height and it/me continued down to the garage floor....
