Whilst we are talking stickers...
On my last Essen trip I managed to find a set of engine bay stickers (for the rear crossmember) and the 'Shell Oils' label for the airbox.

the marvellous Carrera of Paul Voce ('billy964' on DDK).
I looked over the car at Castle Heddingham and it is fabulous.

That car certainly served to reinforce my confidence in the choice of colour. It really is a wonderful shade.
And it attracted a lot of favourable attention. Everyone loves a Lime Green Porsche.

Why would they list a badge for the fiberglass 'spoiler' lid and the steel 'flat' lid as different part numbers?
Why don’t they list a metal badge that is affixed with glue?

I don't think adhesive technology was good enough in the early 70s to stick badges onto 911s. GRP creates it's own problems as the pins would have to be much longer to get through the relatively thick matting, hence the decals (?)

I think you are right that finding a truly original paint rest-of-world '74 Carrera will be tough given how they were used in most of Europe, though I'd suspect finding one in Australia or possibly Japan might give us some clues. The most likely option is finding a period article showing a 1974 Carrera 2.7. While Germany had lots of articles the ducktail wasn't available there. Also in Italy most of the ducktails seem to have been added by dealers/owners due to tax reasons.

I've found PET isn't quite a bible. There have been inconsistencies with the PET as Porsche swapped in later part numbers sometimes when replacement "like kind" parts were issued. There are also examples of Porsche changing the parts they deliver you even though both the old and new have the same part number (e.g. toolkits, air compressors, etc). You can see these are updated over time with the date in the top middle. We should look at the period 1974-1975 PET parts manual (if anyone has a printed copy). My only 1974-1975 model year specific copy is on microfiche and it is a bit of a pain to find a reader. There was an original printed one at the Strähle Porsche Swap Meet in Stuttgart last year that I should have bought. 20/20 hindsight.

Also another data point, here is a photo of a rest-of-world '74 Carrera 2.7 MFI with a decal placed on the vertical surface of the ducktail, just like the '73 RS. This photo can be found on the back of the US 1974 brochure. This '74 Carrera appears to be the same one photographed by the factory for their brochures...and that they might have just fitted a ducktail to take the photo.



I'll keep researching the badge vs decal...this is interesting.

Does anyone know exactly when the switch from the larger Yellow Shell airbox sticker to the wide white Shell airbox sticker happened? I know it was sometime early in the 1974 model year, and that definitely by Feb 1974 (and probably at least a month or two before that) Porsche had switched to the white sticker as the Feb 74 Powerslide magazine showed the white sticker.

It's looking GREAT Paul, the colour choice is perfect if you ask me, silver would have been far too boring for this car and the green looks epic.

Have the DVLA granted you a '63' registration for it yet since it's all new parts?

Yeah, I bet. A light dusting is all you use.

I'm finding out about the costs of a quality paint job.
It apppears that despite the cost of the etch primer, the filler/surfacer, sealer, basecoat & clearcoat - the labour is the biggest percentage of where your money goes.

The breakdown of the costs - as a rule of thumb - goes like this:
Materials: 10%
Preparation: 30%
Yet more preparation: 30%
Sorry, it'll need a bit more block sanding: 30%
Final colour paint: It's alright mate, we'll throw that in for free.

Lovely colour, lovely result and who cares about the lovely numbers on the lovely bill.

I looked at the lime green carrera whilst being at Silverstone: it is a stunning colour. Really looking forward to the updates.

I'm old enough to remember many of the paint technologies of the last half century, enamels, cellulose, acrylic and water based paints.
Nowadays all the talk is of VOC's. Which stands for Very 'Orrible Carcinogens. Or some such.

It means that paint these days must be safe enough for goldfish to swim in.
And in California the regulations insist you can drink it.

So the type of paint used in 1973/4 is no longer available.
And therefore all those colours painted by Porsche in period have had to be reformulated for the new chemistries.
Except that with Lime Green only being used for a few years and rarely requested there was subsequently little demand for it and the usual paint suppliers hadn’t bothered to replicate the colour.
Nick ended up finding the right shade but not from his usual supplier.
Apparently – back in the day – Lime Green was one of the more nasty formulations, being high in lead content.
Don’t lick the car.
