As a confirmation that my thoughts on badges may be correct it’s worth noting that the PET for 1974 lists a Carrera badge in metal as being for a ‘lid’ (flat metal engine lid).
The part number for that is 91155931701.

There is also a Carrera badge in decal form listed for the ‘spoiler-lid’ (which I interpret as a ducktail). Part numbers for those are: 91155903604 (black) & 91155903605 (gold).

Now, if you look hard enough incredibly it is possible to still find NOS gold decals.
But try as I might I couldn’t find a black one anywhere.
Porsche have it as NLA.

I do know one guy who set one aside many years ago and that was Guy.
Look here, he managed to track one down a while back (top in the picture below).

So, as sourcing a genuine Porsche part eluded me, I set about making my own.
I scanned in a metal badge, re-drew it, tidy it up and verified it.
Then I computer cut a fresh decal in self-adhesive vinyl.
So, I’m good to go.

This car is a rare survivor with original paint & graphics.
It has the option for gold graphics selected.

This is a great reference for accurate size & placement of the decal.

Not yet. But I do have a nice primer grey ducktail that is smooth and prefectly shaped.
And it's not drilled with any holes for a metal badge....

Oh and, by the way, I checked again and my speedo does have a 9.73 date stamp just like all the other dials in the set.

Now, I concede that the Carreras should have a 180mph speedo but I'm even more inclined to believe now that the dial is original to the car.
My car was one of the very first RHD cars down the line, it was late Sept 1973 and the dials were all new for that year (not having silver centres).
Maybe the 150mph dial was the only one to hand at that time?....

Anyway, I will probably switch to a 180 version at some stage but for now I'm happy to believe it's what Porsche popped in the dash all those years ago.

Oh, and, I've put it side-by-side with a genuine 180mph dial and they do share the same gearing, it's only the graphics on the dial face that differ.

The reasons for the difficulty in knowing what is original are probably as follows.
The ducktail was only used on two models.
It featured on the 1973 RS – you probably knew that – and on the ’74 Carrera.

In both instances Porsche were coy about affixing metal badges, they used decals on the fibreglass and didn’t drill the lids.
Now, someone will come forward and tell me of an RS with a metal badge but – on the whole – the metal badges affixed from the reverse were used solely on the metal lids.

On the 1973 RS the placement of the badges is illustrated by this superbly restored UK car.
You’ll note the individual metal P O R S C H E letters are replaced with a sticker and the ‘Carrera RS’ nomenclature is placed on the underside of the duck, to the right hand side.

ahem....that will be me then....CarreraRS was a metal badge fitted to ducktails, it was an option specified when the side Carrera strips were not used. Its what i have on mine and is detailed in the Peter Morgan book...Original 911, i beleive, picturing a green RS once owned by Mark Waring
