The shell was delivered to Chesterton's and they set about pulling it apart.

Obviously you'll have realised the car is going to be rebuilt with plenty of fresh steel.
But the core of the car remains as built by the factory.

The bulkhead is original. And the dash. And the tunnel, the rear seat pans, & the back shelf.
It retains the original torsion bars and rear suspension crossmember.
But much of the rest will need to be replaced.
Where original sections of the car survive without rust we will re-use (where possible) and patch into fresh metal.

The front bonnet is the one it wore as it drove out of Zuffenhausen and the doors too are the originals.
The sunroof remains from 40 years back.
The ducktail is genuine Porsche but not from this vehicle.
The front wings came from another 1974 Carrera car.
Most of the remaining panels - whilst still genuine Porsche – have been manufactured later.
New sills, new floor, new roof, new rear quarters, etc.

You realise that if this was a Cobra or a D-Type Jag, the bits you cut out would be built up into another car!

On one of my early trips up to see the bodywork being commenced I was greeted by this sight outside Chesterton's.

It's drastic stuff.
But not quite as bad as it looks.
In fairness whilst Chestron's cut plenty out, these panels were not discarded just yet.
On many occassions this 'waste' was gone back over to harvest sections of original pressings or cut up to retrieve various fixings and parts.
Everything was retained until we were sure nothing was needed from the original parts.
Sometimes we had to go back through the bins two or three times to salvage important sections or possibly just reference for originality.

Are they putting the new floor onto the Celette then lowering the remains of the bulkhead/tunnel/rear floor over the top?

It's difficult to visualise where you start!

Meant to be jet washing a load of stuff today, instead I have had 4 cups of tea and read this thread from start to finish - all I can say is fair play that you are seeing this through. It will be an amazing achievement.

Paul, What needs not to be overlooked is that the front valance is actually a 'spoiler' in its' own right with a lip shape at the bottom which reduces front lift by approximately 40% . This was also true of course for the valances fitted to the 2.4S and the 73RS. The front rubber lip was added only in conjunction with the whaletail which reduced lift far more than the duck. When the rubber lip is fitted with the ducktail it increases rear end lift due to a pitching moment about the front axle. I believe the duck without rubber lip is therefore the more balanced combination.

From experience I can tell you the ducktail with front rubber lip is quite a bit more stable at high speeds (100mph+) than without the front lip. That is why I added one to my 75 which has a ducktail (not original of course .

I think the addition on the lip was just an evolution of the development of the car, rather than a conscious choice not to have a front rubber lip. Given the whale tail gives even more rear downforce I can only imagine the effect of not having a front lip being more pronounced.

You could always buy two front valences, paint them at the same time, and swap them as desired

Sorry to hear that, I can understand though. It's tough at times.
Still, keep upbeat and tackle it head on, you've done it before so you know you can sort it. Don't let slight difficulties beat you.
It just needs determination and you'll see it through.

fairly sure theyve had that one for sale before. the orange one they had seems to have sold.

my resto is just one of many that needs attention from thomas.. he is flat out so basically have given up any chance of having the car this year

If only I could find a 1973 price list I could do a quick calculation and work out how much more my 74 Targa was than a 73 RS, apply that calculation to the current price of an RS and work out that value of my car now.
