Love the detail going into my seats…….a few photos sent by at Alan at Canford Classics of the re-chromed screws and hardware…

My standard seats being rebuilt and re-trimmed with Pepita cloth inserts from Eric Linden will be one of the final items to be completed prior to my first drive in just over a week …..the work and detail coming out of Canford Classics is world class and of the highest calibre…simply superb! 8)

Seems an age ago when Ian McLeod was sending me photos and explaining the details on my CoA…….after 40 years we've gone full circle and the car is very nearly back to how it started!

Despite a new MOT and road tax the car was instantly off the road (hasn't actually yet been 'on' the road!) as we sought to rectify a leak from the oil tank.

The freshly refurbished tank looked to be in pretty good order, however up close….

Image

…the tank was leaking in 2 or 3 areas through these tiny pit-marks and that's before the oil was good and hot! - To be fair Alan did warn me of this possibility at the outset.

We considered repair and lining the tank although decided it wasn't worth the risk after many thousands spent on the engine rebuild, plus the old unit was a sporto tank anyway….so a new tank it was, ordered with Porsche Centre Swindon late Friday afternoon and with them the following morning :) (if you need Porsche parts you won't find more helpful and knowledgable guys than Simon and Tim at PCS 01793 61588, first class service and happy to do a deal too! )…

…only one problem with the new tank…

Image

…a quick bit of backdating required…off with the head from the old…

Image

…and brazed in place on the new…

Image

…making sure the cap lines up of course ….. (to do….change cap!)…

Image

…prepped for paint...

Image

…and we're left with a perfect new (old) oil tank…

Image

If the rest of the restoration had gone as smoothly I would have made CLM…..last year!

Geo next! :bounce: …..

looking good .... for reference though, a real '73 tank is different ;) ( just adding this as in the future your resto thread will be a great place to reference for original detailing 8) )

On a genuine 73 tank the oil filter location actually has an alloy 'spacer' fitted to the tank, to which the oil filter spins onto ( as far as i know , non retro fittable )

Interesting...
My 73T has it's original tank and there is no spacer since I got the car in 1988.
Wish there was because getting the filter on with the plump rubber gasket is a pain.

The thread (male) in the tank is not long enough for any kind of spacer to be between filter and tank.

Do they all have a spacer?
(or is mine really original)

Interesting James and something I was unaware of,

My old tank is the original Sporto unit and never had a spacer attached when I purchased the car (engine has come a long way :) )..…

Image

I assume it's the part highlighted here…..

I wonder why this couldn't be retro fitted, looking at the fixing for the oil filter on both old and new tanks they appear the same?…would love to get it right if I can. :?

One other point to note on the new oil tanks is that there's an additional small pipe by the filler neck that also needs to be removed as part of the backdate, fortunately this cannot be seen once installed…also interesting is that the old tank is steel with a brass neck whereas the new tank is all brass.

Can anyone confirm if the spacer was applicable to all model years (obviously 1972 was an exception) and if this applied to all T, E and S models?

Many thanks,

That does look different….Keith's car is only a few hundred chassis numbers later than mine and yet here's the back of my old tank, definitely original sporto item…..

Keith, would you mind posting a photo of your spacer when you get a chance.

1973 2.4E Restoration

Can't be retro fitted as you can see, the older tanks are a different design ( designed for the alloy spacer to be bolted in place) where as the later tanks the screw on filter fitting is integral with the tank.

I have the original tank for my car with the spacer etc that I removed a few years ago as the copper coating was flaking in the filler neck ( currently sat in the corner of a shed ready to be restored one day ). I now have what I believe is the next batch of tanks , which have the integral spin on filter but still use the earlier filler neck and metal cap.

Not 100% sure when the early tanks with spacers were replaced with the newer design.

73sjm ... Your car is a very late 73 and pretty original, what tank do you have ?

It could well be that my original tank was replaced at some point earlier in the cars life and the tank I inherited was its second……if so I expect it would have been prior to 1991 as this is when the car was switched from sporto to manual, it wouldn't have made sense to have sporto tank thereafter…..a new oil tank within 18 years, seems odd?

Looks like I'll be staying as I am…….until I find a good solid original tank and spacer!

Thanks for the photo Keith and thanks for the insight James. :)

Hi Darren,

All looking good and that first drive is rapidly approaching :)

Look forward to seeing it arrive at Hull docks for the trip to Germany next month.

Here's a picture of the oil tank which I believe to be original to my car and has the spacer James mentions.

I learn something every day!
Wish mine had that spacer but my tank is the same as Darren's and I do think it is the original from 73.
It is a T so maybe some cost saving going on at the factory back then!
