Another step forward, several steps back.....
The wing project has been dragging on a bit, mainly because real life gets in the way. I knew at some stage I would have to trial fit the wing before painting it because I might have to do some more chopping about to make it work
Suzanne is away for a week so I thought it an ideal time to grab a bit of "me time" and I've booked Monday and Tuesday off work to get on with it.
The plan is to:-
1. take the existing wing
2. Sort out whatever corrosion I might find on the inner wing
3. Trial fit the 'new' wing - making whatever adjustments are needed to get it to fit
4. Re-fit the existing 'patinated' wing - maybe try to make it fit a bit better
I would then prepare and paint the 'new' wing at my leisure before fitting it.
So, off we go....
Plan for today was to get the old wing off.
After a while it came off OK - this is before I managed to disconnect the headlamp
Then came the inspection of the inner wings. Now I knew all was not well down there - I'd got corrosion coming through down n the front in the luggage compartment, and I'd also noticed some corrosion just forward of the door when I was working on the footwell blowers
However I got a bit of a surprise
The front half is better than I thought it would be
So that's my weekends work cut out for me then, and I use the phrase 'cut-out' advisedly.
While I was there I thought I'd offer the new wing up as well.
Not good
Basically as I'd replace the vertical support 'bar' on the new wing I'd not got it in exactly the right place. The placing of this is crucial for the wing/door gap - as a consequence there is a horrifically large gap between wing and door.
So realistically the plan for the weekend is going to be focussing on letting in new metal to that inner wing - getting it nice and sound and rust free - and protected for the future.
With regard to the 'new' wing I don't think I'll have time to do any cutting and shutting, but I will be able to make a much more accurate template to work from for when I do get the time.
The bit I was worried about (the shape of the lower part of the wing) seemed to be pretty good.
Looking forward to an active few days....
Will keep posting progress.
