Was thinking of acid dipping, but might look at media blasting now, as if I ended up with a sieve, like you say, it would be really demoralising (and wallet busting)!

Which ever way you do it, swiss cheese is swiss cheese. Media blasting won't make a car less rusty!!

In the bottom left hand corner can be seen the tunnel reinforcement fitted to late Carrera RSs and carried over to the first few hundred 1974 models. It passes through the bulkhead and is welded to the torsion tube.

Plenty of horrors were revealed by the acid bath. One such incident was the roof.

At the outset it was apparent that there was a bubble at one of the rear corners of the sunroof aperture.
Barry Carter had looked over the car some years ago and observed that it would likely reveal to be more troublesome than was visible.
He also advised that any repairs to that area are very difficult due to the double skinning (and the fact that you cannot access the underside to effect repairs convincingly).

Well, he was right on both counts. And the problems just kept coming.
It turned out that the roof in that area had been bodged & filled and the repairs extended a lot further out than we surmised.
Also the other corner had rusted too.
On top of all that the acid dip revealed holes at the front of the roof and again at the back where aerials had presumably been fitted.
The troubles got worse on the underside of the roof because in their struggle to fit an aerial those guys had merely hacked away at the roof rails with the tin snips. Nice work.
In fact I did find receipts for that work. So I know who the culprits were. Cumbrian culprits. No longer trading these days though.
And anyway, back then it was just some beat up old Porsche.

So we had a roof with two rusty sunroof corners, several drilled holes, a butchered rail and then rotten corners at the base of the front window aperture and rear windscreen base.

So, you can guess what’s coming next.

Yep, “we think you need a new roof”.

Fair enough, that seemed valid but aside from the cost (about £1,250 from Porsche if I recall correctly) it’s a real tricky part to fit.
And was about to reveal a whole load more horrors.....
