Yes - get rid of the o/s battery box (& battery) - unnecessary weight & better airflow for a wing-mounted cooler if you're planning on using a 28-row brass or radiator-type cooler.

I have a 3.2 in my 73T with twin batteries. Never gets hot in the UK weather. It has a trombone cooler only.
I think overheating could be an issue when standing still

Do like the idea of this; I guess the radiator type coolers are much more efficient and have seen quite a cool air scoop through the horn grill mod that I might try to replicate.

personally I'd keep the battery box .... I like keeping the original metal ... especially if the design / philosophy of this car is to follow a 'period modification' where things like removing the battery box would have been less likely

Hi James,

I have been pondering this - on one hand I would like to keep the car as original as possible so it could easily be taken back to stock if desired, on the other hand my guiding principles with this build is that it was a 'street racer' modified in the late 70's when these concerns wouldn't have been an issue or cared about!

In that case, provided it was possible in 1978, anything goes! - edit: provided it looks cool!

The current battery box is toast anyway, the irony is that I ended up with two new OS Porsche battery boxes from my last build so have a spare one already!

Hi Darren,

I had a few of these built for the front wing cooler whilst i was trying to source a decent original. Based on the 911R- 2.2S type cooler. The later one's are much cheaper than these pre-72 types though.

Didn't the factory have to fit a fan when they went to a radiator cooler?
As you say, that box will fall out of the inner wing with a gentle tap so best have it out and panel it off.

The 2.2s and factory race 2.3 ST had engine cooler plus 1 front wing cooler.

Race 2.5 ST went for twin front wing coolers. No fans.

i have a brass oil rad (not the trombone type) the 28 row type that you could have Darren

a good mod but much more "period" than a later SC type

came to me as part of a package of parts but is surplus to requirements

£150 to you (or anyone else if you dont want it!)

1973 RS had a trombone oil cooler, so that would be just about period.
