Larger Fuel tank time

With a few days spare to get my next project rolling.

A bigger fuel tank to incorporate my through the bonnet filler. The idea is to use the bottom half of the Vw tank as most reps use this and make a new top half. Target capacity is 80ltr. Vw tanks hold about half of this 40ltr. I've measured what the bottom Vw half holds which is 21ltrs, so need to make something around the 60ltr mark.

I will be using the original 356 Gt tank as a base. Not looking to make an exact copy if the Gt tank, just something similar that will fit our reps easily without or little mods.

Here's the bottom half of the Vw tank.



Here's my cardboard buck which will now be made from wood to bash around .



Fitted this in the car without any issues. So now just need to get the jigsaw out and start cutting it out of wood

You could also remove the section of the bottom half that clears a LHD steering column.

Liking this thread, have been thinking about a larger tank for a while !! Cant wait to see the finished item.

I've got spare unused blue foam blocks to fill it and stop surge if you're interested , having been around this buoy with my 911.

Bruce l did take that into consideration but thought l could get my target 80ltr without it. Now that I've measured it all up for capacity it measured 79.4ltr's so all is good. Time to do abit of woodwork.

Andy l was under the understanding you can't use foam if using a Vw type sender.?? Was thinking of putting a couple of baffles in unless anyone can up with another idea.

Me to Steve been thinking about this for a while, and seen a few extended tanks but nothing that floated my boat, alot of thought has gone into it.

Nice work I'm not expert in fuel senders but would assume foam would spoil the function of any type with moving parts which would contact the foam. My 911 type unit is enclosed in a cylinder.

Hi Rich, looking very good so far as you know I am very interested in this project as I have got my filler and nice shiny cap waiting. If you can get near enough 80L in a tank that would fit our cars that would be amazing!! even with my petrol thirsty car I'd get between 250-280 miles as at the moment I can only do 100 miles on a full tank. I'll keep watching this space for updates and have to come and see the finished or nearly finished project. Keep up the good work

Time has been precious the last few months and not made any progress, until we were blessed with a covering if snow. This has given me alittle time to spend on the tank. Progress the last few days has been in leaps and bounds so not alot left apart from the rain tray around the filler neck and position the filler itself.

Had a lot of problems with a brake servo which is tucked away under the scuttle panel. Thought of re locating it but that would solve one job and create another. Anyway the last few months has given me time to think it over without chopping the tank up to much.

With the measurements calculated, they come in with a figure of 72ltrs but filling it up will be the real test.
