So back to 2012 and what do we have….

…initial strip down. A partial restoration was started on the car back in 1989 after it was vandalised however this was never completed and it's been dry stored since...

…the 2.2S engine turns and seems ok, engine oil smells old but looks good…

Image

…gearbox appears solid although sadly no LSD…

Image

…as before, gearbox will be going to Mike Bainbridge whilst engine rebuild will be taken care of by Nick Fulljames at Redtek.

The fitment of the 2.2S engine and 915 gearbox is odd. I've recently been in contact with the third registered keeper who owned the car from 1981 to 1985, he confirmed it was was still a 2.4 Sporto at that time - subsequent owners had the car for just a few months so expect the engine change was someone's abandoned project? :? ...

Body is fairly straight, original and largely unmolested…

…still plenty of rust though….

Image

…shame we'll be losing the original painters signature 8)

Image

….rear quarters and sills (not back dated  ) were replaced late in the cars life. We'll be taking the paint back to bare metal on these pending a visit and inspection from the Metal Meister on Monday to assess what can be salvaged…

…now all I need is a three car garage and an understanding wife!

Another source of my inspiration Andy, if I can get this car anyway near the standard of yours then I'll be a happy boy

Hi Darren

Is it a sunroof car?

Looks like it will be a great resto and you will end up with a fine collection. Now are you sure you don't want to donate a 2.2S engine to me. Remember it is nearly Christmas.

Keep us updated with your suburb pics.

Kind regards.

very similar to my Hotrod Darren

will be a lot of fun I think

I am going wider rear arches just to allow for wider tyres (8 inch)

centre fill tank?
one of those racing style red lights on the roof?
front brake cooling ducts let into the spoiler?
a Wevo gearshifter kit?

I personally like the engine lid louvres Magnus Walker does..I have looked into it though and have been put off by the cost...money no object I definitely would

if you just want superior braking power I think the C12 ones are the best for the money (and can be anodised into different colours...see Nick Moss orange car)
Megane R26R
Discovery Sport
Defender 110
BMW R9T
Trek Superfly
but sadly no Porsches any more

Thanks John, yes it a sunroof car - for now!

Sadly the collection will probably have to shrink and expect the 993 will be paying for this one

A little more stripping prior to Barry's visit on Monday…

Image

…a few sections of the floor will need sorting along with correcting previous repairs…

Image Image

…the rear quarters, which I imagine were fitted just prior to the car being stored, are pretty much as new, un-repaired and rust free…

Image Image

…the fitting of these panels wasn't terrible although gaps could have been better and probably created a draft inside the car!

Image

…the roof is actually in great shape bar a couple of small previous repairs and far better than expected….

Image

…and the front wings are perfect and were most certainly replaced during the previous refurb - although just as well the car was unused and stored shortly afterwards, there's so little paint and protection on the wings they wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes out on the road

Image

This leaves me with a bit of a dilemma :?

The plan was to delete the roof to save on weight and I was even considering a carbon fibre roof as per Nick Moss's 3.5 R/T (hardly pre-1978 but am I allowed to cheat if it's not seen?), however with the roof section being in good order and original equipment, should I keep it? :?

…also, I was thinking fibreglass front wings and hood but with as good as new front wings do I retain these or sell them off to help fund the project? :?

My one concern with lightening the front of the car too much is front/rear weight distribution and the effect on handling - I'd welcome comments from someone with experience of this set-up :)

Cheers,

there are no rules ;)

it's not a track car is it ? More of a streed rod ....... so personally , I can imagine blasting through the German forests, high comp motor screaming away , sound from the open headers echo back off the mountain sides .... sunroof open to capture the full effect ;) ...
