Just a quick mention for my new best friend - Tomtom.

Coming off the ferry I found a new option in settings - as well as choosing 'quickest' 'shortest', 'avoid motorways' etc you can now also choose 'winding' on the iphone app.

We used it for a route on the way down and also on the way back. Both routes were utterly fantastic. I mean really really good. Exactly what we would have chosen ourselves. You only see main roads as you are crossing them, a mix of bendy bendy, and straight country roads, popping through a few villages along the way. We had some of the best driving I've had, and because of the routes chosen barely saw any traffic (I'm talking overtaking one car in an hour long drive)

Thoroughly recommended.

In the "change settings" options choose 'route planning'. In there you can say always use winding road as default route type OR say to ask you each time. If you choose the latter you get to then choose Max, medium or minimum winding. We went with Maximum.

I've used it a few times . I believe it's come over from the tomtom 'rider' nav for motorcycles . Just need a way to pre plan routes and load them on to my iPhone tomtom software now , although I don't think there's much chance of that anytime soon .
