Targa bar (under dash)

Post by grannysmith »

Hi guy's
I recently found out my car should have a reinforcing bar bolted under the dash. It hasn't got one and this might be because the car originally had A/C. Any bar would have probably fouled on the 4" duct that came from the smugglers box to the vents. It doesn't have the mounting points either so does any one have photos that would show what the bar, mounts and positioning look like? It's something I would like to fit now the A/C has been removed.

Thank you
Mick

I have a bar, removed from my '69 shell.
Off to CLM this weekend, but happy to help when I get back.

Thank you Alan I will be needing one but I need the mounts too. Do you know how/where they fit. The panel I think they fit seems to be single skin panel gauge on my car.

Hi -

Barry's put some clearer photos on my thread that gives you a much better idea of the bar & fixings that I managed in my earlier photos.

Hope alls well, build is looking great!

R

Edit, Barry's put them below :-)

Thank you Richard
I saw them yesterday and contacted Barry via pm so not as to take your thread o/t. I'll be living without the bar because my car doesn't have the mounts. Now that I've seen a close up picture its easy to see why they're omitted for a car with a/c.

Sorry chaps: I didn't realise there was a thread here as well, otherwise I'd have put the pictures here.

Let me sort that out now and cut-n-paste from Richard's thread:

Untill your post earlier this month I hadn't known that the foot wells had the additional gusset. I've done a bit of reading since and I found a piece in a book (The 911 & 912 Porsche by Dr B Johnson) It says targas have a steel reinforcing bar bolted under the dash. It doesn't give if this was all years though. Have you come across something like this? I cant find one on mine, but my car has never been stripped down as far as yours.

enjoying the story, loving that radio

Hi Mick

Richards car has the bar, its a crude looking thing, I am sure we took photos of it when we stripped her. Its difficult to miss. I am sure Richard will post some photos.

Kind Regards
John's right, it's a really crude box piece of metal that sits across the car, a little under the dash. I don't seem to have any photos of it (it's that easy to take in and out!) and it's at Barry's now, I've asked him if he has a minute, to send me a pic.

In the meantime, this is where it bolts onto, the bar itself has a flange that goes over this receiver and then you just bolt straight through - hey presto no scuttle shake..... (not)

Here we go chaps: sorry for the delay in getting these:

As has been said, it's pretty crude, and hard to see that it's going to be doing very much, as it's virtually rubbing under the dash / bulkhead anyway. The fact that it looks a bit tacked on though rather suggests that they found they needed some extra strength in this area. What surprises me is that they didn't add one more bracket to bolt it up to the dash / bulkhead area somewhere near the centre, which would have taken any whip out of the box section.

Anyway, there you go :) .
