Brake fluid reservoir warning device

Post by stevesprite »

To satisfy the SVA test I need to fit a brake fluid low level warning light. I have managed to get a brake fluid reservior from a Sierra that has a warning device fitted in the cap.

Has anyone fitted one of these to a speedster brake system before ?

Any clues on what wires go where ?

Steve,

I haven't as I didn't need to SVA my car, but...

How many electrical terminals are there on the warning switch? I guess more than two if you're not sure about wiring it up??

I believe the warning light needs to have a test switch to meet SVA - usually this is hooked up to a switch on the handbrake so the warning light comes on when the h'brake is applied (this switch is in parallel with the level warning switch in the reservour). Probably not very practical to hook a microswitch/door switch up to a beetle handbrake though (circuit made when handbrake applied), but I guess a toggle switch would be allowed?

Its most likely that you want to route an ignition switched 12V supply via the new warning lamp to one terminal of both the test switch and the warning switch, and connect the other terminals of both to earth. I don't know about the pilgrim loom, but the Chesil loom only has a single ignition switched feed to its fuse box (the right-hand one; all the others are unswitched).

Hope this helps..

Simon

Jesus, didn't realise the SVA was this serious.

Do any of the these modern cheap Korean etc cars have brake fluid level warning systems fitted as standard because I'm sure these chepao nasty cars couldn't be fitted with all these things. All seams a bit OTT

The warning switch has three wires.

There is a test button on the top of the switch which should satisfy the SVA.

Steve,

Found this on a kit builders website for you:

<snip>
On the original Sierra the Low Brake Fluid Switch has 3 wires coming out of a moulded rubber plug. Brown to Earth, Brown/Green ran direct to the Handbrake switch and a Brown/Yellow to the Instrument Unit at Pin 9.
<snip>
So, I would connect Brown to earth, leave brown/green unconnected, and connect to brown/yellow to your warning light, and the other side of the warning light to an ignition switched 12V (fused) source.
