Trolly Jack ?

Post by mycar »

I can`t avoid it any longer, I`m going to have to get a jack of my own, it`s well overdue.

I`m thinking along the lines of an alloy `race jack` as I don`t have the room in the garage to be wheeling round a full sized affair, some thing like this...

Image

Sealey and Clarke do them, are they likely to be any good, keeping in mind that I`m probably not going to use it on a daily/weekly basis.... more likely a blue moon basis.

And what`s the minimum lift weight I should go for.

Your opinion would be appreciated,

Regards, Mike.

Looks very much like mine, its been great, had it for about 3years.
It was from e-bay about £80 from memory.
Very low when down but has very good lift hight.

Get some good axel stands too that jack looks the business and a good block of wood helps get a few more inches lift out of your jack
Are you going to ask Mrs Mycar to get it you for Christmas or were you going to get it for her?

Don't know why but I always think these are just a bit poncy. If you don't intend to lug it around in the car or flash it out in the paddock at all those race days you do why not just get an all steel low entry version instead.

If you do go ali make sure its one like Keith's with a wheel in each corner and not that rolling pin like the one in your picture.

Agree with Nige - nothing wrong with a basic steel 2-ton trolley jack.

I bought a Clarke one, I think Clarke is the Machine Mart in house brand, it was rubbish, I took it back, it had a tendency to lean over to one side, just wasn't stiff enough for the job in hand.

I bought a Halfords one, its much tougher and more able to do the job than the Clarke one, but has now started to leak a little.

I'll buy a Sealey one next time.

Still have my steel one after 20 years of use and abuse, only problem is now I could do with a low entry type as I have to partially lift both the Golf and the Porsche now to get it under in certain places. Think that came from Halfords but it wasn't their own brand.

Just remembered its Master Mechanic.

2-2.5 tonne will be ample any more and the physical size of the jack might be too big for your space. Might be worth roughly measuring the height from the ground to your lifting points, front is usually lower to lift and then you can determine if you need a low entry jack. Else otherwise you'll have to ask Hayley to lift the car an inch or two so you can slip it in.

I should imagine you'd need a low entry jack, I don't mean 'low entry' as a beginners model either.

Hi , I've been using the Clarke aluminium racing jack from Machine Mart for the last couple of years. Its big plus point is the low minimum height of the lift platform as well as being easy to lug around. It cost £89.98 + VAT = 105.73 from a store , might be able to get it cheaper online but if something does go wrong its easier to take it back to a store IMHO .

Looks very similar to the one in the picture earlier - blue anodised bits.

Stated max load is 1.25 tonne but unless you are going to lift the whole car in the air so that it is totally supported by the jack , ( clever to find CG first ) then this does not really matter for a 911 . My cars are lightweights anyway !!

I agree, I have the " race jack" & a halfords "speed" Jack, which I got in the post christmas at 1/2 price. You need good axle stands and Draper do
good sturdy ones which are safer. The Race Jack is great for lifting up engine and box, but you need three people to keep everything line up and balanced.

Costco have a great bit of kit on offer. Twin piston alloy, twice the size of the
ones in these pics. £84 + vat. Would be £200 in machine mart.
