Great day yesterday as after a year long build and installation the new engine dyno ran for the first time! Here's Neil putting the
finishing touches to it prior to start up as Phil checks the fuse boxes:

Neil clicks on the mouse to start, the throttle lever next to his hand set to idle. A separate computer system is running the cell with
auto inlet air temp controls, ventilation/air conditioning and extraction flows.
back in the cell the newly built 2.7 motor is running beautifully for the first time as Neil makes few manual checks.
After a short run between 800 and 1200rpm for the temps to come up, the revs raise and settle at 2000 for the first stage in it's
running in program which will take 4-5 hours. The engine oil is still a little cool here, the dial will change from blue to black in a few
seconds as it moves to it's set operating temp, it's when the dials go red the fun starts!

Can you tune (say) a set of PMO's on a dyno as well as (I hope) you can on a set of conventional rollers?
You shouldn't tune an engine on a engine dyno and fit it into the car without checking it on a rolling road afterwards as the fueling/timing could be out . Engine dynos are a tool for "ideal world" power figures and pre-flight checks of an engine before you fit them into a car . Hot engine bays with reduced airflow and transmisson loadings etc etc are a different kettle of fish compared to temperature controlled dyno cells with free spinning engines .
An excellent tool for engine builders though and this one looks superb .
Don't know about setting an engine up in a dyno instead of in the car.
Isnt that like revving it up and down with the clutch down? - didn't people move on from that to putting the car under drive load with rolling roads.
Looks nice and shiny in a 'rev it up with a joystick' kind of way.
Is that glass flying conrod proof..

The majority of engine calibration is done on a dyno these days, only the fine tuning to take account of drivetrain and body compliance is done in the car.

I think Neil might just disagree with you there, the whole point of the engine dyno in it's cell is that you can replicate the environment in which the engine
performs on the open road far more accurately than you can by strapping the whole car down on a pair of rollers and thrashing to within an inch of it's life
with no air going through it! The heat alone in the engine bay generated when you do that bears no resemblance whatsoever to the air flow over the
engine when your cruising down the motorway at 70mph, and that has a tremendous affect on the air/fuel mixture.
