Shane, would you share the paint codes for the silver? Is it the same silver as a normal 356 silver?

Paint Codes for K45-286

How are you? I have no problem sharing the paint codes with everyone. When I decided on a Silver car I was nieve to think, well I just want Silver, when in fact as you all know there are a million silvers on the market. I know that I wanted an authentic Porsche silver. I had visited the Porsche Museum online and saw that same silver over and over on all of their significant and historic cars. So I decided that I wanted to not just paint my car any silver, but the same silver as the first Porsche 356 was painted, K45-286 was the color I wanted an no other color would due.

I called over a couple of times and sent some emails to the Porsche Museum explaining my build to them, what I was doing and told them I would honored to paint my car the same color as the historic K45-286. The name of the curator from the Historical Archives Department was Jens Torner over at Porsche and he got back to me. He talked with a Klaus Bischof from the museum also on my behalf. He was more than eager to provide the paint codes to me and said if there is anything that the Museum or the Archives can do for me to get another Porsche on the road, they would help. I was just amazed at this response and assistance. Porsche made their money on my car over 45 years ago and here they are still helping out a Porsche Owner, very cool in my book.

Anyway, this is what he gave me and this information is what Bill used to get the paint for my car. Below is a quote from the correspondence so these are his words:

"The silver color of the museum cars is Porschesilber 980, made from Sikkens. All Historic museum cars (550 Spyder, 356 Nr. 1 (K45-286), 256B Carrera GT) are painted in this color. Additionally that color is the same color for BASF/Glasurit and is named Por 936 and the number is 91109590380936."

The Porsche Museum and the above curators were kind enough to share with me and I would love to share it with anyone else that wants it. Hope this helps. Most people are going to see a silver Porsche 356 when I drive down the road, what they will not know it is a very specific Porsche silver and has historical significance. This is the kind of details that I love about restoring my car.

Thanks,
Shane

correct silver

Post by Ren »

Hi Shane, I am fine thank you for asking. I have also been told that there are a lot of silvers and not just on the market but on some of our cars. When you go to a meeting you will notice the different range of silvers so it would be good to have mine painted the same as the Porsche museum samples. At least then it would be consistent with them and they are the manufactures so it should be as close to correct as they consider right.

Any way - my car is a long way off from painting back to silver as I keep enjoying the car (driving it) rather than put it back in the garage. I think this winter it will be going in the garage for sometime. I hope its not for to long though.

Thank you for the information.

Mirror White or Silver?

Post by balkowitsch »

Million dollar question of the day. I have a GT Mirror for the driver's front quarter panel. I wanted to do something different and paint the mirror housing the same color as the stripe, my only concern is, and Bill's concern also is that it may appear to be an afterthought and we do not want the mirror to look like we put it on later and could not afford to paint it the silver, what do you think? White GT Mirror or Silver? Bill said we will try it white and if we do not like it we can always have it sprayed the silver, but any input would be appreciated by anyone at ddk.

Thanks for following,
Shane

Hi Shane

Paint it silver, you can always paint it white later as a afterthought.

Paint Complete

Post by balkowitsch »

Here are some new photos of the paint completed, some final buffing and it will be on its way back to Bill Hamilton and his team sometime this week. Can't wait to see it out in the light of day, that damn paint booth lighting is killing me. Want to see the Porsche 356 No.1 Silver shining in the daylight. Thanks for following. Let the assembly begin.

Final Undercoating Prior to Assembly

Post by balkowitsch »

Well the car is in its final home during the rest of the restoration. Bill is giving the car one more layer of undercoating, as all 356 owners, we hate rust. There is always overspray also during the paint process so that is also taken care of with the new layer of undercoating. Bill is in discussions with LN Engineering about the proposal for the performance upgrades. As soon as we have anything finalized I will share. Somewhere around 150HP will be the goal for the engine.
