Three Castles Rally

Post by elkelk »

Driving up Tuesday for the event, prologue on Weds and the rally proper runs Thurs-Sat.
The car is now ready, it'll be running on 6"& 7" Minilites with 70/60 profile rubber.

Hi I have not done the Three Castles. Is it run to MSA rules? If so you should be aware that maximum rim diamter is 6J and minimum profile tyres allowed are 70 profile. (See Blue book H126) I currently have this issue wiyth my new 911. Had to buy a set of 6J rims and source some suitable 70 profile tyres. Would be interested if this event runs outside these regulations.

They allow 7" rear for the RS because they never ran 6" rims. Likewise with the profile, 70/60 is the correct front/rear size. They will not allow the option of 7" front, 8" rear on 65/60 profiles. This is a problem unique to the 911 it seems, the price you pay for being ahead of the pack when it comes to development!

Was there any particular reason why you didn't go with 6 and 7 inch Fuchs.

Absolutely, cost

I have a set of 7" & 8" fuchs which I use for the road. I'll use the minilites for rallying, they're very light and I'm not too worried if they get scuffed up a bit.

When you say they, do you mean Three Castles or MSA? I am very interested as this would mean I could run different wheel and tyre sizes on MSA events. What 70 profile tyres are you running the front?

"It will be promoted by The Three
Castles Motor Club Ltd., under permits to be issued by
the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association
Limited (the MSA). These documents and any other
permissions will be displayed on the Official Notice Board
at Signing On. The event will be held under the General
Regulations of the Motor Sports Association (incorporating
the provisions of the International Sporting Code of the
F.I.A.), these Supplementary Regulations, Official
Bulletins and any other instructions the Organisers
may issue."

The fronts I am using are 185/70 Pirelli Cinturato

I have just double checked e-mail correspondence with the event organisers, they have stated that 911's on original wheel and tyre sizes (6" 70 profile front, 7" 60 profile rear) will not be penalised, but others will.

I guess this is a Three Castles decision and not an MSA ruling. Pity. There is a lot of discussion at the moment through the HRCR about using less than 70 profile tyres. Imps have had the OK as there are no 12 inch 70 profiles left. Just in process of trying some Vredstein Sprint Classic which are available in 185/70x15.
Like you intend using minilites for rallying but Fuchs for general use.
Hope you have a good event. Talked to several people who have done this event before and they all seem to like it.

Many thanks, I tried the 185/70's on 6" rims for the first time Saturday, it feels like jelly now! I think i'll pace myself until i get used to them...

Did the event last year (on 7's & 8's!) and it was superb, very well run, great scenery. I have a virgin navigator this year, so could be quite colourful inside the car

Pictures look good. How did you enjoy the event and how did you get on with those 6inch front rims?
Bolted mine on ready for next event and the rears look daft under the wide year arches.
