75 S to R Homage

After my questions about oil coolers and a quick financial reality check I think I've solved the problem with a little creative thinking and some fabrication work.

It looks right, only needing me to turn three threaded bosses and get busy with the TIG.

At an outlay of £15 its worth having a go even if its not brilliantly efficient . My car however has loads of front wing and bumper slots so the cooler will see loads more air than some.

The tubes are 1/2 inch with a wall thickness at about 40 thou' . Ive used 24 tubes. The top tank is split and the bottom is cross flow.

Bit more DIY progress

Epoxy coated oil tank ( thanks Alan




Porsche T Stat salvaged and modified to take 3/4 BSP tails. Its that colour because of etch primer.


And yes the tank has been pressure tested at 50 PSI Air ( bit fraught don't tell then safety police )

And the bores in the stat are still circular

Update:

the oil cooler is still a work inprogress . just awaiting the bosses for the hose fittings then welding.

BUT...

I finished and fitted the rear brakes. These are 944 Turbo units with 911 sc discs. VERY tight under 15" rims but it all clears. I'm a bit worried about just how tight once the wheel flexes so am considering going to 16 inch rims which also opens up tyre choice a bit. I can't get too precious about 15's being more period this isn't and never will be a real r..just my interpretation.

Set of steel head studs Aqua blasted, NDT'd to nuclear standard no significant corrosion or fatigue , dimensionally accurate so refit is in order. Now off to powder coat exposed surfaces with the fuse box.

long range tank progress and a happy son.

Just got to tack up and dress the new section before welding it up then joining it to the cut away tank. Abandoned the bubble on the front , too much hassle for little gain . Then I need tio find a bit of tube buy a 100mm Blau filler neck from early 911 and finish it off.

My alloy tank and front mount oil tank is not dead just waiting !!!




A happy boy, first sit in the untrimmed recaro style shell.

Andy I'd think twice about going to 16's - never mind the originality thing my understanding is that you gain quite a bit in unsprung weight which is not a good thing, and on a personal level I think the look isn't quite right - something looks slightly wrong and you're not quite sure what.

Just my 2 pence worth (can't find the 2 cents icon) and obviously it's your car, your decision. Impressed with the tank work, and forgot to say those 944 calipers look the biz

Hi mark, Im forced along the 16 route out of concern for clearance when a wheel flexes. They do currently clear but only just

I too have trawled pictures of cars with 16's and can live with the look so be it

How much flex do you expect to get from your wheel Andy? I'm not being a smart-arse but I wouldn't have thought they are going to flex at all - they're bolted to the same thing the caliper is bolted to so I would have thought tolerances could be pretty tight? Is it worth trying them first and see if you actually get a problem?

The problem is that my calipers are only clearing the rim by about a mm . Actually if I swop wheels around I can get a tiny touch when the wheel is spun.

Two issues:

1. I am not happy I have any stone clearance at all so a trapped bit of debris would destrol the rim , possibly the caliper and maybe more if it led to an accident.
2. I don't know how much wheel flex does occure but any more than 1 mm and I definetely have a contact issue.

Its a bit annoying really since a little more caliper offset at the rear would have solved this but one offs ususlly have development problems.

I've also got a hankering to drop the spindles on the front struts so the larger wheel internal diameter will help there.......

Better safe than sorry and as I said I like, or can happily tolerate the 16 look. ( saw some lovely 17 Fuchs on pelican.... )

Can't abit be machine of the inside of the rim and the caliper to increase clearance? Or is already at a limit?

All excellent points - 1mm is pretty tight!

Andy Perkles (over on IB) has some nice 17" Lindsays on his ruf rocket that look pretty cool

Could you take some material off the calipers? You've obviously considered that so I'll leave you to it. Looking forward to seeing this one on the Road

I took all I could off the caliper edge so we are both following the same trail. I love those 17's Didnt know Mr P had some I'll have a look.

For now I'm on the track of some 16 by 6's from Alan uk.

Could do with abit of a refurb, currently stripped of paint but the original anodising is intact.
