have only ever seen a couple of Sihouettes- didn't they make something like 50 odd?

Jalpa's always seem to be overshadowed by the 328 - I still think that they look great!

Wondeful Jalpa Rich, I recall reading that article!

In my spotty yoof way back in 1976 or so, I was at Earls Court motor show, and I spent a long time gawping at the spectacle of the gold Silhouette and the gold Countach that was the Lambo stand. I was properly smitten, and impressed as I had just read the account of them being driven there in Car magazine, and the golden glow didn't fade until I got to the porsche stand...

I can always remember being on the Kings Road on a trip to London years ago and seeing a Jalpa parked up, I waited around for ages until the owner turned up and started it up and drove off - what a fantastic sight and sound - that's stayed with me for all these years - I'm 48 now and can remember it like it was yesterday. I wanted one of those like nothing else in the world !

I still think I should buy one - what are they like to own/drive/maintain etc etc - I'm on a corporate driving day in a Murcielargo next month so after that I'm sure it won't take much to push me over the edge and finally buy one !

Aha now, Steve, this might be highly interesting. Was that the year Porsche Cars GB had cars that were all black -with-chrome detailing, even the Carrera 3 and turbo 3.o?

John Ward of PCGB 930 registry sec (and other notoriority  ) mentioned such a set up at Earls Court a couple of times but I have been trying to find someone who was "actually there" in either '76 or '77.

Can you recall anything about your porsche experience perchance?

Kind regards,

Bert

Hi Bert,

Yes I remember; it was '76, and there was no '77, because this was the last one held at Earls Court, the show went to the NEC in '77. I think they made an effort because of this.

IIRC, yes the Porsche stand was blacker than a black thing in a tin of boot polish, black boot polish at that. I was gutted...why?...because I was praying that a silver/martini stripes Turbo would be there...ah well. Apart from the black cars, and the turbo, the other thing I wanted to see was the Pirelli P7 tyres on the supercars, and they were huge!

I remember imagining (I was good at that at 15 and a half.. ) what a gold Silhouette with a black Turbo and a black and gold Moto Guzzi Le Mans would look like in your garage, they were amazing times...strange to think that the RS was 'old hat' in '76, but I still loved them. I also loved the Daily Mirror dolly birds, but oddly enough they didn't notice me....

I didn't get any pics, because I left my 110 instamatic on the train....

So, yes, all black IB Porsches, gold Lambo's and red Ferraris, I need a cold shower, even now....

Steve. :)
