A really great (6 day) week-end. Great company, great cars, great event.
Queuing in the pi55ing rain at portsmouth docks made me wonder what it would be like. Then you look at people in XK120's holding an umbrella (no roof!) and realise we'll have a good time come what may.
Cabins on the boat were surprisingly good. Bert came into (Ian and My) cabin - he's been offered a place in Nick Moss's cabin on condition he didn't fart or belch. We explained we operated a similar policy in reverse, and he would be expected to contribute to the overall orchestrations.
Off the boat and it's still tipping down. Had a breakfast stop in Caen before we got moving, and then set off in convoy on the excellent route Phil had planned.
en route
It didn't go entirely to plan and the group got split up.
Eventually ended up in a cafe for lunch and were split into 3 tables. Our table chilled out and were still there enjoying our 'petit noirs' long after everyone else had gone.
When we left we decided to resume the planned route as it looked so good. We were in a convoy of only 4 cars and the sun had come out by the time we came to a stretch of abso-feckin-lutely gorgeous road - sweeping bends, dips, camber, woods , - it was fantastic and we all let our cars sing - some singing a bit louder than others (Mike Usiskin). This stretch was one of the best drives I've had in the car, on or off a track.
Got to the camp site - scorching hot - then discover that Ian who's come with me has brought a small cathedral in tent form - result! Put our tents up in the dry just in time for it to pour down. Everyone else looked pretty miserable until Gazebos appeared out of nowhere. Things changed then - food started cooking
Next morning - up and dressed
And it's off down the mulsanne straight for a photo opportunity
We had to drive of at speed - I forgot there was a ohtographer there and nearly took him out.
Eventually parked up in the second chicaine on the mulsanne straight
Then it's off to the paddock for a good look around - some amazing machinery

One of my faves
Eventually we ended up in one of the grandstands - that we managed to get into without tickets (presumably because it was practice day)
What a fantastic event! Surely the best classic car show there is. Already looking forward to 2010
Great to catch up with old friends and to make new ones. Thanks for the laughs everyeone. JohnM, many thanks for the drive.
I took hundreds of photos, here's just a few of the fantastic machines on display. I've got loads of people shots too, I'll upload them after I've slept some more
Arrived back yesterday safe and sound after a round trip of 2124 Kms. The car ran like a dream and didn’t miss a beat, averaged 23.8 mpg and used about a 1/4 litre of oil.
Really enjoyed the weekend, the cars the people the driving and the weather were all fantastic.
A big thank you goes to Tim who made it possible for it all to happen and for looking after and enjoying my car.
My photos are mostly crap compared to the excellent ones already posted.
