Engine Lid Grill

When I bought my car it came with 2 spare engine lid grills, as well as the grill that was attached.

Reading Mikes thread http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19639 inspired me sort out the chrome grill that came with my car and get that fixed on.

However, upon looking at the engine lid in the above thread I noticed that my lid is different. Mikes has a central strut across the gap, but mine doesn't. My car is a 1969, so is a bit later than Mike's, but not much. Have I a got a 'rogue' engine lid? Or is a 912 lid different to a 911 lid?

If it is the correct lid, anyone any idea what sort of grille is correct for a 1969 car? Should it be chrome or black?

Hi Stuart,

As I understand it, the engine lid with the central bar ran up until 1968, when the bar was deleted. The grille should be chrome, 911 and 912 lids are identical.

your funny..... Guess what I have been doing today... My Grill....

I made the spacer bars for the undertray at my mates machine shop.. Talking with Mike and Paul at the Fairmile the other day about machining got me thinking I do need to get back to the machine.. So I knocked up a load of the spacer bars... so my tray is all bolted up and looked good. THe grill is now nice and clean and the whole lot is finished..

now to find another wet weather day job..

Thanks for your repsonses, just one more question.....

I had a black grill fitted, and I've just noticed that the studs on the chrome grill that I want to fit are a different size to those on the black grill so the spacers for the undertray won't fit. Are these spacers bars not readily available then? Will I have to get some machined?

Pretty hard to find the original aluminium hexagonal spacers - They do turn up, but rarely. Next best thing is to ask Mark to machine you up a set!

Nice spacer bars Mark!

I'm not sure that I may need new spacer bars as I think my chrome grill is the wrong type for my car - can anyone confirm? And if it is wrong has anyone got a pic of the correct one so I know what to look for!

I am not totaly upto speed on grills other than that looks like a 67/8 grill to me. so about right for your car..

the bars are easy to make it's just the time and access to the machine in the first place. I keep meaning to buy a lathe/mill Hobby one as I used to be a Machinest when I was a wee boy..

Same I don't have access to our old machine shop ( it's all gone now and the building ) i was the CNC guy. We used to have a laser cutter that was great for side line jobs.. draw a picture out on the paper the laser used to follow it and cut the steel out upto 2" thick

I used to make Small hands as paper weights for fun for the office when I was just using up material.
Miss those days we could almost make anything. We had a Russain 30Ft bed lathe one of the biggest in the South. I used to do some big stuff on that till 11 at night when a machine went down. Some times work though the night to get stuff made and out the doro the next day. Most of what I made was big heavy stuff crane's needed for every thing even to put the billet in the chuck needed a lift. One job I did on site needed Europes biggest Crane to come to the UK to lift it off and then alow me to take out the old bearing and gear and fit the new one I made. Then that was £35K to turn up for the day!!! so if the gear was wrong I was in the SHI&&. Had it all back in in 30 mins and sent the crane on it's way ..... and it's 4 trucks that came with it!!! took then 2-3 hrs just to set it up..

Some how now I make curtains and blinds and design rooms for people not sure how heavy work like I did to fabric worked out but it's sure cleaner

That grills wrong as you suspect.

You need the 1969 on grille..the change came with the LWB..

I thought his targa was a 68 car?

The 69 grill is different it's the same as mine and goes right thought into the 70's cars

Hi,

In case it helps the 69 grill is different than the later 70> ones. The 69 can be ID'ed as it has 5 vertical support bars while from 70 they used 3.

Alan - you've got your grilles mixed up ...

'69 grille has 3 vertical 'supports' behind the bars

'70/'71 has 5 vertical 'supports' behind the bright (silver colour) anodised bars

'72/'73 has 5 vertical 'supports' behind the dark grey/black anodised bars

Right, so it seems I need a 3 bar chrome grill that was only made for 1969 cars. Sounds like I might have to be patient in finding one!
