I read the article that had it on the cover (GT Porsche?), it's an interesting history. But did I read correctly that they were going to keep the dent in the roof?210bhp wrote:Porkey

I often wonder about the patina/sympathetic resto issue, as in, where do you draw the line? Is there a wear and tear clause for 'patina'? I mean hasn't the Beirut RS suffered damage 'above and beyond' its call of duty? Doesn't the conflict that damaged it constitute a 'force majeure' that would allow an agreed by all sanction to return it to as sold condition?
Steve.

According to the latest info I have the roof dent has been repaired to 'almost undetectable'. I think if this were the case I would want to keep the original roof rather than replace with a non original clip. In all cases I would want to keep the original panels on the car even if they are less than perfect. Everyone to their own opinion of course.
Regards
Mike
P.S. I think you are right , it was also in GT Porsche magazine.

Right, I understand it a little better now; you're meaning replaced panels would turn the original into a facscimile of its original self, nay a pastiche. Methinks I was missing the point somewhat...

Re: RS
Just to round out this thread, as many of you know I bought the Black/Red RS that sold in London recently. Never underestimate the power of the market in other assets, to give someone the comfort to make the decision to pay increasingly higher prices for a car like the 2.7RS. I recently sold my Dino and also(look in a couple of the recent car mags for pictures) my Stratos Stradale. I truly loved them both but they we either fragile or expensive to maintain. The 2.7 RS is (in relative terms) neither. I just thought of it like any other reinvestment - these two had been good places to have cash for a year or two and had seen me right, so the absolute price level of the RS wasn't the issue (if that makes sense) it was more that I wanted to be in a real 70's classic still and it had to tick the reliabilty and (relative) performance boxes. There was only one thing to buy. Oh, and I can still do Tour Auto.one-two wrote:In my view, RS prices are just silly. It's not a scarce car, it's not a fast car and neither is it eligible for much competition. To be more provocative, I think a lot of people are in the market because it has risen so strongly. Anyone buying one now - at twice the price of a GT3 RS or four times the price of a 2.4S - wants their head examined.

Very true Mike! Not that I did of course. Funny thing about the Stratos is, everyone tends to think that it is a Hawk rep but the guys in the know are always squinting through the engine bay vents to see if it says "Dino" in there.
Actually paulyb, mine was the red one that Martin Chisholm had for sale. I think it was featured in C&SC this month in one of those "Drive our ads" kind of features. It sold just as the mag came out.

Thanks for your viewpoint; it's good to hear from someone who has swapped into an RS from other known classics. Thanks for sharing on this thread G, but don't forget the pics!!!?
Funny but your choices are very similar to what I (nearly) did. I've always loved Ferrari's and have also ached for a 308GTB. I nearly got one from a classic and modern dealer near me, Preston way. The salesman was pushing a 360 at me and did me a great favour and himself a dis-service, he said;
"Don't buy a classic Ferrari, it'll break your heart and the bank, buy a modern one. If you have to have a classic get a 911, solid, safe and still look good.!"
"Have you got one in?"
"No."
"Bye"
And here I am.
Cheers,
Steve.

value
A more positive contribution from me. I think the 308 is real value - top end for the fibreglass cars seems to be 35K-40K for something that's scarcer than an RS and prettier than a Dino. I guess we have yet to revalue late-70s cars in the same way that we have revalued early-70s ones. Talking of which, what price a nice, clean 930 turbo in a few year's time?

Yep - love the 308: Had a mate who had one up to about 2 or 3 years ago: though my indoctrination process must have been good 'cos he swapped it for a 2.2 911
Much as I loved the car, I'm not sure I'd agree with the "prettier than a Dino" comment though
But slightly biased as the Dino is probably my next target: Won't replace the RS though

....so fill it in , paint it and do a paint thickness profile of the dent so that if anyone else wants the car with the dent they can RESTORE the dent
Cheers

Funnily enough that's exactly what this did to me:
And that's why I'm now a Porsche man!
