I've driven a few. I'm tempted to say that I can't think of a worse car for a three hour drive, but that wouldn't be true! I think the test is against contemporary cars. That's the calculation the original owner of your RS made when they bought the it rather than whatever the classic of the day was back then. As then, there are too many really good modern cars - eg GT3/RS - for the exchange rate to work for me now it's so stretched. The more you guys try to persuade yourselves the more convinced I am!

Personally I would always prefer my 2.4S for 3 hour drive as I have still yet to find a car that I enjoy as much on the road. Of course an 'RS would be nice too

I will admit I would choose a modern diesel if we're talking about a commute etc ... but luckilly I work from home & only minutes away from some of the best roads in England so my priorites might be slightly different

Now, if you are on a budget, but want fun, and want to pass that GTI holding you up on the twisties, AND want to shorten that commute, we all know there's only one answer - 2 wheels

I think I have reached the perfect life-combo when it comes to cars: The Smart CDi is excellent in town and really, quite useable on longer journeys if required, the '92 500E Merc is a superb mile-muncher with the added benefit of being Porsche-built and now, with the forthcoming arrival, I have the ultimate weekender...

It's not that bad! I got 26mpg on the way up through France last Christmas and then nearly 27 from Dover to Wirral.... Cruise control forced on us now in France by draconian fines for even minor speeding and in the UK, the traffic kept the speeds down...
Must admit, day to day, it's about 22mpg - not terrible but then again, it's a great Q-Car, my old Taxi!

Each to their own I guess. Rather depends what you want from a car.
There are very few modern cars that I get overly enthusiastic about really, and have to say, money no object I'd go for something like a 250SWB or an old 8C Alfa, both of which again fit into the 'no faster than a modern Golf' box, but there's more to life than just the speed. Surely fun, character, sense of occassion and driver input / satisfaction count for more.
Anyway - rather enjoyed my run this morning. Great weather, lovely roads and very little traffic. Though I'd admit it does seem a long way to go for a coffee

I agree with this entirely. As for the coffee, I'll do trips like this anytime. Once in about '87 I rode my GSXR750, (with its Metzeler Comp K's, its newly jetted Mikuni flatslides, and its Rapier race exhaust) up and then back down Snake pass four times in each direction, and then went to the Lake District, to scrub the tires in

I know we've all done stuff like this, but my point is that enthusiasm at this level is more than just collecting 'a' car, it's a huge emotional investment too. It's exchanging money for a vehicle that allows you to enjoy fantastic experiences and exchange them with a peer group that feels the same way about it! How good is that?
I can't (yet) afford a 250GTO, but I won't bemoan the cost of owning one, or say that the Lightweight E-type is faster.....
For me it is all about the cars that I love, and not the money.

Except in Winter. Or wet. When I was 18, which I can almost remember, I took a Suzuki 250X7 and did dispatch riding in London, in January....
I learned London, but it was the most miserable, icy, cold, damp wet experience in my life.....I still shiver remembering it. Brrrrrrr.

I get the emotional point - it's why the Daytona and Dino have risen almost as much as the RS. Those of us of a certain age remember all of them and some of us have made some money. I think the problem comes when we get the emotional mixed up with the objective. The RS is a great car, but so are some others. As it gets more expensive some of us are going to get more emotional - others are going to get more critical.
