On the subject of collecting I've got quite a collection of the RS books if you're ever across this part of the country drop me a line - you're welcome to use them for reference if required

Hi Steve,

I got into downhilling through XC; specifically doing the 'High street' in the Lake District, have you done that? Three miles of slog up, then four miles down through amazing terrain. 8)

I have to finish this brief that I'm working on now, that will take me till the end of this month and a bit of Feb, but after that I'll let you know, and I'd love to come and a have a look. Thanks for the great offer, the generosity of the members on this site is incredible! 8) :)

Thanks again,

Steve. :)

Michael Birch wrote:Steve,

I found my car through Mark Waring and had it inspected by Josh Sadler (Autofarm) before I bought it.

David Gilhooley and Mike Chadwick were very helpful. Although whilst David didn't introduce me to the seller, he did know the car and owner very well so could confirm a few things. He also inspected the car so I could get a FIVA Identity card.

Lee Maxted-Page has sold a number of cars recently. I've dealt with Lee and find him good but he does know what a car is (or could be) worth. He is also in partnership with Andy Prill so the cars do get looked at properly.

Other sources not previously mentioned are;

- Export 56 - Mick Pacey.
- www.mirbach.de - a mate bought a lightweight from them 2 years ago which I did Tour De Espana in, Lee M-P then resold the car around 6 months ago.
- www.thiesen-kg.de - they had a ST that I looked at recently.
- www.classicdriver.com - there are 3-4 for sale on there
- www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk

Also see if you can get your hands on a copy of the French monthly Porsche magazine "Flat 6" which has a large classified section. I looked at a RS lightweight in France that was advertised in there.

(There are people on here much more knowledgeable than me on this however...) there were just over 1,500 RS built. An original run of 500, a further run of 500, then the remainder. Somewhere after car 1,000, around 1,200 I believe, the factory started to run out of the Lightweight body panels and other unique RS parts so reverted to using standard 911 items. For instance on the later cars the ducktail has a steel (and not aluminium) frame. One of the dealers mentioned here told me if the car was 1 of the first 500 then "it was something to talk about for the sale" but didn't really add monetary value.

For a car that hasn't been raced or rallied then original matching engine/chassis no's are important, and this info is easy to check in Konradsheim. This would add monetary value against a car without the original engine and seems to be important when buying/selling a RS.

If it has been raced/rallied then chances are it will have had a new engine at some point.

Conversely I looked at a proper GT40 last year and the original Ford engines don't even have no's on them, so for these cars the original engine seems not to be as important.
HI Michael,

Thanks for another great post, I've tried all those links and amazingly the 'classicsforsale' site even brought up the Orange one from Oz! There was a nice Viper Green one in Germany, but didn't like the full roll cage, or the big drilled foot pedals in aluminium. Picky? Yes.

I've read in an article that at their time the RS was cheaper to rally than a works Escort, hence many of the early lighweights were abused and allowed to fall into rack and rooney.

Cheers again,

Steve. :)

Nothing to do with me by the way.
Thanks hmy7k,

I have nothing against white, and this one looks spectacular! But, and this is why I am looking for a 'striking' colour, the T+S is a designer! In this family we call her 'She-who-chooses-colours!' Annnddd, she thinks that the white 'bleaches' out the shape, and is 'a bit amorphous'........ :? Sorry white car owners, I think they look great.

Bertroex you are a hero!  :notworthy:

What a post! Thank you greatly for your efforts, what a selection of pictures! How subtle is that grey one, looks great?

I think we are creating a fantastic reference thread here, probably been done before, but it's looking good here.

Where did you find all those pics?

Anyway, here are my favourite colours from what I have seen so far;

1) Blut Orange (especially the OZ car.)
2) Aubergine.
3) Light Yellow.
4) Black.
5) Signal Yellow.
6) Viper Green.
7) Gulf Blue.
8 Grey.
9) White.
10) That green named after the liquer I can't remember. :?

Cheers,

Steve.

Bert - one slight correction to your 'colours' post :

Frank Enea's car (ISCREEM number plate) is Burgundy not Aubergine.

This (Luke's old '72 2.4E) is Aubergine:

Hi all, and thanks to everybody for their great responses. Here's a quick update of where I'm at.

I've followed up all the links so far and have frozen my bandwidth with the amount of e-mails sent to people in the know.

I have yet to see or hear of a car for sale or coming up that is as good as the OZ one. The Gulf car at Hairpin doesn't show sold yet and they haven't replied to my price request yet.
I'm going to try a second email to the Classic throttle shop asking just why this car is so expensive. Much as I want to buy the car that I desire, neither do I want to become the owner of 'that orange one that was 60k more than everything else.'!

If the UK specialists don't respond to my e-mails I'm going to have to take a day out to ring them all.

I like the Viper Green car at Fiskens, but am not sure about the yellow bit at the back, or, for some strange reason, the steering wheel! :?

Should anybody have anything further to add please do; and thanks too for the great PM's.

Cheers,

Steve. :) 8)

Just remember .. don't be in a rush & buy a car just because it is availble ... RS's always come onto the market as there are still a lot in existance. If what you see on the market doesn't fit your criteria then wait as one will do at some point... also 'speak' to some of the specialists and let them know you are serious and see what they can come up with.

Enjoy the search ;)

Bertroex, thanks for those pictures, i think the beige grey would look great with correct fuchs, and the olive green is strangely attractive too.

I think the advice has been very sound on this thread, personally I was very patient, did lots of homework and then dealt with a reputable expert, i took no chances.

Good luck and take your time!

Bert

The RS colour you are not sure of is Jade green. The only RS in that colour and Mark Warings old car. Where is it now?

Regards
Mike

Thanks James,

I think you might be right about 'speaking to them', I've had no reply from two of the main places mentioned here; Edmond Harris sent a 'sorry, nothing available' reply. Hmmmmm.....I'm going to have to make some time for some phone calls.

I'll let you all know what happens. I am surprised at the more famous ones not replying, especially when they have the e-mail facility built into their websites...... :?

Cheers,

Steve. :)
