Got it!

Post by sjm »

Morning all - well, picked my A up yesterday and have to say I am absolutely delighted. Love it. Already had complete strangers stopping me to ask about the car and just say nice things. This is new to me because I usually drive a Range Rover. People wave at me in that as well, but not normally in the same friendly way.

However, had a slight problem this morning. The car started fine, with plenty of power in battery (it's a new battery), but then almost as soon as it is firing and ticking over it just dies. It did this 4 or 5 times until it finally stayed ticking over - but it was idling quite low and the left hand warning lamp was glowing. I think it was glowing green, but I'm colour blind so these things are tricky! :(

The fuel pump has been rebuilt, as have the carbs (including new diaphragms), so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas what this could be please?

Many thanks!

(Oh, and how do I get a DDK tax disc holder?!?!? It's held on with sellotape at the moment....)

just sounds like typical a cold start, old cars with twin carbs need abit of coaxing when waking up in the morning, provided it settles to a nice tickover once warmed through I wouldn't worry too much about it. I assume the green light it the charging light, so it could be that the idle speed is alittle low. Dynamo's have a low output so the charge light will flicker if on a cold tickover, if that makes sense.

I'd put some good miles on the car, get some serious use out of it and if you have tickover problems the idle speed probably just needs abit of tweaking. That's carb's for you.

Thanks Nige - after posting I called the mechanic who prepared the car and he said exactly the same thing - so that's reassuring! Now I know. :)

See the DDK online shop.
And can you test it out too as someone else was reporting a problem :)
Thanks

I did wonder - he said he'd been on the phone to a dwarf in leather pants, so I put two and two together from yesterdays DDK photo gallery....

I'm not a 'Dwarf', I'm a person of restricted height, thankyou very much.

I'm actually 5'11'' and weight 17.5 stone, but the internet is a wonderful thing. I can actually be a he or she and wear what I like at the weekend, whatever takes my fancy.

Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing pics..

I saw the KK website pics, but it'd be nice to see some proper ones.

Glad you have had a good response.
I don't know what the natives are like round your end (apart from the ones in sarongs, that is) but I have had good and bad attention on the one occasion I took the car into town since I bought it..

-lots of head turning and thumbs up, a prolonged explanation to an old alcoholic, (who appeared to be having a religious experience),and then a guy who walked up with his kid whilst I was getting out of the car and very rudely took lots of camera pics, ignoring me completely, and then walking off!

Got back 20 minutes later..it had been keyed.
Lovely. Just through the laquer, as far as I can tell, but you know, what is it with people?! .

Sorry, don't mean to be grumpy on your special day! Enjoy your fab car in this fab weather 8)

Bloody hell - sorry to hear your car was keyed - what scum. :(

I'll be taking some photos at the weekend and will try and post them. Any ideas on how I upload photos please? Is there a link explaining?

Glad you're enjoying the car. I did take a quick look at it a couple of weeks ago at KK. Looked lovely!

I'll be going to Hedingham on Sunday too. Assuming you'll be coming over the Dartford bridge I could meet you at Thurrock Services. PM me if interested.
