my 912 clutch

can anyone help out there. My 1965 912 needs a new clutch does anyone happen to know wether i need a 180mm clutch kit or the 200mm one.
Do i have to take the engine out to find out or are they standard size for the year.
Also while i am at it. I was quoted a price from COOL AIR which seemed very reasonable and they believe the clutches are compatible with a 1600 Beetle one, does anyone know if that is right.
Thanks alot in advance i am new to this Porsche owning lark and find it next to impossible sourcing the right parts

well if it's the same as VW unit best of luck..

if it works you might get about 5000 miles before it goes again..

But I am always learning and if you can use a VW clutch let us all know.. but I doubt it.

a 912 clutch is going to cost about £450+ poss even 600 some one on here has been quoted £1000 fitted. which is abit over the top..

That's what I thought thin eg less miles out of it..and I do think it is as low as 5000 miles.

Here's an idea can these discs be re made eg kimber friction is local to me in Southampton and they do relinng.. wounder what the cost would be.. ?

I did a little bit of digging around on this not so long ago.

Cheapest i think at the moment would be from pelican - $352 + $184 shipping+vat is about £325?

Transend are doing them for £329 + vat and roger bray if i recall was £380 + vat

You could always pull the engine and just replace the worn part - ie if its the disc you could get it relined or just buy a new one, worked out about £100 (i think?) but then you take your chances on the other parts being ok - depends how you drive it and how much i suppose.

I might just have managed to get away with mine. Seems the synchro on 2nd is just a bit girly and has eased a lot by just putting in fresh oil. I'm thinking about sloshing some swepco in there and praying to the porsche god (a lot) but i'm sure the day will come when i have to do it

David your right I have heard alot of good things also with these, put these are for more performance engines but I am still not 100% sure they are for Porsche ( I think i might be wrong on this so worth checking out )

yes another good idea it's what I have done until I collected all the right parts is to just replace the worn out part for now.. and certainly use a VW one but just remeber your only going to get at best 5000 miles off it.

it is an easy job to do your self you know. engine out change it put it back should be about 4 hrs if you have never done it before. 1.5hrs if you have. Incuding tea breaks

Thanks to everyone for such good advice. After alot of research both here and in the states i established that you CAN'T use a beetle clutch. It would have been a nice ending as that was only £75. The Kennedy clutches are available for the Porsche 912 but are mainly regarded as competion clutches and abit over the top for my sedate pace of driving. The cheapest place i could find for a Kennedy clutch was in the states. With the exchange rate and the amount of parts available out there for the 912 its a great place to start.
However at the last minute Max at REVIVAL CARS where i originally bought my 912 came through and from his large stock of hard to find 912 parts came up with the goods at a very competative price which i couldn't afford to turn down.
Thanks once again for all the invaluable advice i am learning quickly its not always what you know its who you know that counts. Thanks to you all especially REVIVAL CARS.

When I came across this problem I got hold of a spare off ebay for experimental purposes and had a company not too far from me replace the diaphragm in the pressure plate and re-line the friction plate. total cost was around £100 (I cant remember exactly it was a while ago now!) however I can't comment on performance because my engine is still in pieces

Watch this space anyhow and I'll report on how it goes later
