993 + ???
Hi all, from a new member in Surrey.
I have a 993 that I've owned for a while now, and am in the process of adding an early car.
The chase seems to be half the fun - none of the possible transactions is 100% straightforward. So far I've had a lot of interesting chats, spent really many hours on here, early911sreg, samba, ebay etc, and learned more about import duty and VAT than I really wanted to know.
Pics seem to be encouraged. Apologies that it's a bit modern but here's the 993. It's a simple Carrera, and must be pretty-much the lightest spec of 993 (which is not the lightest car, of course), being 2WD, pre-varioram, and without aircon.
The earlier 993s had shorter gear ratios than the later ones, which makes a difference to the feel.
It's a low miles (about 50K) car, and I think a keeper.
I've done a few small mods, mainly in the suspension department. It's now running Bilstein PSS10 adjustable coilovers, with the ride height set to RS+about10mm, set up by Chris at Center Gravity. Very nicely balanced now.

Other cars?
Well, in common with at least one other 993 owner on here, I have a 2014 M5 as the family bus:
Seems reasonably well built for a modern car, but I'm thinking the rear tyres and the bulb in the traction control light might wear out quite quickly.
And I used to have one of these (2003 M3 CSL):
Enough, I think.
Cheers, Richard.

Off Topic - CSLs are genuinely, suprisingly, special, don't you think? I like to imagine that the chaps in grey suits who signed it off for production had absolutely no idea how mental it was. Just an E46 M3 with a few more hp and a carbon roof, nothing to see here.

Thanks Tom. I remember your 993S from 911uk. Didn't know you also had a Turbo. Good work.Tp81 wrote:Welcome Richard, nice cars.

Thanks. Yes, it's a Huf. Quite appealing I suppose. And my wife tells me it has a garden. I've not really noticed - too busy thinking about cars.cubist wrote:Welcome... cars are king, of course, but is that more Huf German engineering they get wrapped up in at night?

Welcome to the madhaus, Richard.
Coincidentally, I was in Munich Legends yesterday afternoon just after a customer had dropped of his 18k mile from new, grey CSL which is being prepped for sale. Had I not just bought a Turbo I would have been seriously tempted to jump ship and give one a go. A question though, if I may? It's too fast to have fun on public roads, isn't it? I'm already concerned what with the warp speed of the Turbo and a CSL is equally as dangerous for my current clean license, isn't it? Isn't it wasted as a road car?inaglasshouse wrote:Off Topic - CSLs are genuinely, surprisingly, special, don't you think?

Nah, it's fine. I used to commute in mine sometimes. Here's a typical 6AM shot before braving the A3 into London:left4dead wrote:Welcome to the madhaus, Richard.

(I kid you not. But only once in the snow...)
One good thing about the CSL is that it at least has the decency to feel fast when you're going fast. It's pretty direct and the engine noise (... ooh, the engine noise...) reminds you that you are pressing on.
Which Turbo do you have? I find 997s so smooth and effortless that they really are dangerous for the license. Same for the M5, and the RS6 I had before that. They don't feel fast, but then you look at the speedo...
It probably is wasted as a road car though. Which is why tracks were invented
Cheers, Richard.

My TT:
Have only 200 miles under my belt since collecting but impression is of a grand tourer / cross continent mile eater rather than a 'sports' car. So I'll probably have to buy one of those as well.

Ooh, nice. Harbour Cars?left4dead wrote: My TT:
I think a 996TT at current prices is a good place to put some money. Metzger = classic status and you're immune from the reliability worries. Good choice, enjoy it and try to keep your license.
Cheers, Richard.
