My steering column has quite a lot of play in it - in & out and up/down. I've searched Pelican on this subject and found loads about a) how hard it is to remove the whole column to change the bearings and b) how easy it is to bacn in a new plastic sleeve which solves the problem.

I've seen design-911 sell the sleeves but they and Pelican both quote them as being for 74-on cars. anyone know if there's a difference on the early cars?

Just another option for that may work.

The top bearing had worn on mine, I just bought a new bearing and then looked at trying to get the old one out, which I prompting realised I couldn't, fortunately there was enough room on the column to press the new bearing on over the old one, it works perfectly. The steering wheel still locates correctly as well. But that is my car, so may different to yours.

I am pretty certain the later ones are different. The top bearing on yours is curved at the top and sit in the shaft. You can buy these new
PNb on the PET is 914 347 711 00.
It is possible to completely remove the column from the dash, by removing the three sheer bolts. I have done this on my S resto as I wanted to re-plate the parts. There is also bearing at the bottom of the shaft that is also worth replacing. It is located by 2 lock rings. Here is a pic of mine with the new bearing, the new top bearing is not in the pic.

Careful folks the most common cause of apparent wear here is actually the tiny top hat sleeve that sits under the retaining spring on the wheel. All columns move without the wheel on but most people loose the sleeve and don't notice that it is missing, it is that that gives the play. Weve had 86 requests such as yours and each time it has been the missing sleeve and we've never seen a worn steering column per se. PS our headliners are genuine and having sold 623 without problem of them think we can say they are good. Peter Andrews Transend-

Spotted this thread on Pelican this evening - the last two posts - . The 'top hat' bit was on the wrong side of the spring. So much for professionals

I put my Motalita wheel on and went out for a spin, it feels like a go-kart again I must admit I was struggling to keep the car in a straight line on some of the faster straights yesterday.

Came in for me dinner and saw the replies here.

I'll put the original wheel back on and try it but I think the problem's fixed. Big relief. Thanks all.
