anyone got a list of everything that needs to be / should be done / checked at the 'major' service for a pre-73 911?

Here's a servicing list from the Haynes manual.

Every 250 miles, or weekly..

Steering / suspension
Chech tyre pressures
Examine tyres for wear & damage
Check steering for smooth & accurate response

Brakes
Check reservoir level
Check system for leaks
Check braking efficiency during an emergency stop
Ensure handbrake will hold car on a steep gradient

Engine
Check engine oil level & top up if necessary
Electrical
Check battery level & top up if necessary

Every 6000 miles or 6 months

Suspension / steering
Check for free play in ball joints & linkages
Check rubber boot, bellows & bushes for deterioration

Brakes
Check brake pad wear
Check free play in master cylinder pushrod
Inspect all brake lines for damage & corrosion
Ensire vented discs are unobstructed

Engine
Check valve clearances; renew valve cover gaskets
Renew engine oil and clean magnetic drain plug
Renew engine oil filter
Check engine for oil leaks
Check tension of alternator drivebelt
Check spark plug gap (except CDS)
Replace contact breaker points (except CDS)
Lubricate distributor. One drop of engine oil at each linkage/pivot point; trace of petroleum jelly on cam profile
Check points gap/dwell angle and ignition timing
Check all engine controls and lubricate pivots/linkages with engine oil
Check idle speed
Check condition of fuel system hses
Check exhaust system / heat exchangers for security & corrosion

Transmission
Check clutch play & pedal adjustment
Check transmission oil level
Check for transmission oil leaks
Check for free play in driveshaft joints
Bodywork
Lubricate all door locks and hinges
Check operation of heating system

Every 12000 miles or 12 months
Engine
Clean fuel pump strainer or replace cartridge
Renew spark plugs
Renew air filter cartridge
Clean crankcase breather vent cartridge and check condition of hoses & tightem connections
Transmission
Renew transmission oil & clean magnetic drain plugs
Bodywork
Check condition of all rubber seals on doors etc
Ensure drain holes are unobstructed

Every 24000 miles or 2 years
Brakes
Renew all fluid in brake hydraulic system
Engine
Renew oil supply line connecting socket & filter on mechanical injection system

Plenty there to keep your mileage down?
I believe that some specialists do clean your brakes though!!

That's a fairly full list Mick.
Porsche's own recommendations can always be found in your manual (unless it is in Italian) that came with your car James.

You should change the engine oil and filter, have a look at the plugs and check the timing. Other things to consider; brake fluid, gearbox oil. Have a look at the brakes as well, after all the car will get a bit of thrash to Le Mans

Doh, just put my reply on the other thread, James: here's the copy ....

Hi james: I think if it were my car, I would simply look at the non-mileage critical areas:

Engine:

Oil and filter regardless of miles (already done).
Visual check of spark plugs and air filter: just to confirm no symtoms of problems.
Dwell angle: if this remains spot on, then the timing should be fine.
Quick check on exhaust condition.

Brakes:

Brake fluid if near two years old (hydroscopic, so time rather than miles), if not then just level.
Check all calipers/pads for free movement of pads (i.e. jack up, plant brake pedal, then check pads have completely released: free spinning wheel).
Check for corrosion on metal brake pipes, and perishing of rubber hoses.
Check handbrake releasing O.K.

Suspension:

Visual check of rubber bushes (perishing).
Check for dampers leaking / operation.

General:

Check all lights.
Gearbox oil level.
Gearshift adjustment.
Wiper blade condition, and fluid level, jet aim.
Battery terminal condition.
Twirl fuses if prone to corroding.
Tyre tread depth, nail damage, sidewall damage/distorsion, pressure.
Horn operation.
Underbody condition: touch in and wax where appropriate.

Really not much more than MoT plus change things that get old, rather than wear out. Or at least, that's what I do with anything I run now and again.

i have got the shop manual on cd.
i will have a look tomorrow and let you know.
