RUST !!!

I've discovered some more of the dreaded rust on my 912 and need some advice and help. There's not much, but it is in the boot area and I can't get at it. Okay, so where the steering column exits the Cowl into the boot area, the intermediate shaft angles at 45 degrees and is covered by a plastic cover, held in place by 2 spring clips. At the cowl end of this cover, there is what seems to be a heater duct extending out into the boot for about 18 inches, with a flat end held in place by 2 bolts with locking tabs. It is under this duct?? that the rust is noticable, so I need to take it out, but, having undone the 2 bolts I need some advice as to what to do next.
Is it held in place somewhere under the dash? And what is it for ? The 2 bolts were quite substantial, so it could be important.
I can find no mention in my Clymer manual, or Duane Spencer.
i have a photo, but can't see how to attach it to this topic.
