I have a set of Fuchs which have been laquered at some
time. The wheels are in good original condition except that the laquer
is coming off in places.

I would like to remove all the laquer and then polish them up.

I have tried cellulose thinners which removed some laquer but not all.

I have considered paint stripper but I fear it may remove the black
anodised finish aswell.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience of this?

The black is paint not anodising, it is very tough and will be far harder to get off than the lacquer, trust me I know how tough that black paint is. It makes me think the rims were originally painted before they were anodised.

If it is the original black underneath go easy with paint stripper and you will be ok. (Maybe test a little area first) I had some original fuchs that someone had sprayed black, I used some stripper and some fine wire wool and hey presto.

Are the wheels anodised under the lacquer as if you want to polish them, the anodising will have to come off. I can't imagine hand sanding that off being much fun.

I am not trying to achieve a highly polished finished just bring
them back to original.

I am interested in what Nick says about the black paint.
Are you saying that light use of paint stripper will not harm it?
Obviously I will test on a small area first.

I am sure that household Nitromors, used carefully, will not harm the black. Try it on the back if the rim first,

See miggs's bit in the members only bit about resto of rims I think he used Mr Mussel oven cleaner.....

paintstripper will take some of the black off but not all of it if you are going to do it go whole hogg and get them mirror polished

Well I have used Nitromors, which I left on for a
short time, and it worked a treat.

There was no sign of any black lifting off.

Does anyone have any ideas for touching up some minor
wear on the black anodising?

Wurth Satin Black is the generally accepted match
