You can't do any harm trying the handle but if the actual drive has gone it still won't open. If it fails it means a strip down

Dude,
Had the same problem with mine, abit of a pain in the ass to fix though.
Unfortunately its abit of a design fault I think. The drainholes for the sunroof (the they exit in either side of the deck lid) are right next to the cable/tubes that open and close the roof. Bit of crud in the drainholes and the water has nowhere to go except into the sunroof mechanism!
I stripped all sunroof out, motor cables/tubes and cleaned everything up and then lubed it up before re-fitting.
One of the cables had seized solid in its guide tube, I left it a few days in my shed and kept squeezing penetrating oil down the tube. It wouldn't budge. I got angry with it and clamped one in of the cable in a vice and pulled on the outer tube with my full 'beef cake' 17 stones until something gave. It did and luckily I didn't break anything.
Anyway I ended up with a working sunroof, still leaks though.
A 911 Haynes manual helps when removing the roof panel, motor and stuff.
The motor has a rubber bush/coupling so it shouldn't damage itself. Does it make a loud clickety clack noise?

NO!!!!
I 100% know what this is ..... Pop the switch out the dash and there will be a few wires on the back. I think it was either the big black one or the red one.
Press alittle on the wire and it will make contact.. The nosie you hear is you closing it NOT opening it.. Trust me on this one and don't do it too much as you will break something..
So pop out switch
move the wires about on the back and then press the switch ( the only noise we want to here is it opening.. if you hear noise and it's not moving YOU ARE pressing the switch the wrong way )
I know this will work 100%.....
just move the wires about the back of the switch.. It is a small job I said to you I never got round to fixing. But it is only a wire it is not motor or switch as I have had the switch aprt before and cleaned it all up..

Nige I did tell him about it
I did grease up and clean the roof and the runners so it should run fine. It did before so there should be no reason why it can't again..
With out seeing it I can't comment other than what happened to me and how I started to diagnose the fault. I am sure it will run as it was the smoothest running sun roof I have had. It was just that switch..
How about once you open it to check the stops just case it has over run.
There is a zip at the back to gain access..
