Racing harness cross member - 914

I know that there are proprietary ones available but £150 is a bit steep so want to make my own. Can anyone tell me which of the existing seat belt holes this cross member fits to - the side panel ones or the rear bulkhead ones, or both?

Hello, Roger.
I assume you mean the holes for the recoil seatbelts in the back panel.
If I was making a bar I would use the ones at the side, and additionally bolt through the back panel at the ends of the bar.
This will avoid it swivelling under load..
You need to get it right back against the back panel and the rear straps MUST be horizontal or at most a tiny bit high or low..if you look in the Blue Book from the MSA, or even
www.fia.com, you will see what I mean.
belts used often to be fitted sloping down..this has been shown to cause serious spinal injuries in a noteworthy shunt..
BTW, always make the lap belt absolutely bar tight, leaving the shoulder straps very slightly looser...

Thanks for the comprehensive response - I believe the proprietary bar just fits to the inner sail panel but I will feel much more comfortable with a rather more secure fitting to the bulkhead too.

Roger,
I made my own a while ago and it fits between the two top fixings I made an angled plate that once welded to the main cross tube then bolted straight onto the existing top seat belt hole and works a treat.
I can take some photos tomorrow if you like. The whole thing probably cost no more about a few quid in materials and my labour.

Hey that Black 914 looked neat Like the harness bar great Idea and I am sure it can be made for sensible money..

get what ever lenghts of metal you want at

Thanks for the further information. Ad - I've checked out the US web site and got some useful pictures. 912UK - now that's my kind of supermarket - none of this food stuff - just lots of lovely metal
