just been looking through the new Demon Tweeks mag & noticed Dunlop offer a 185 / 70R15 tarmac tyre (D83J) in a number of different compounds Not sure if these are 'road legal'.

Anyone used these tyres ?

Interesting . . . and a good price.

If they have decided to make them in 185/70/15's at least they'll fall under the 'road legal' section . I'd call to make sure they are the right size before buying . . . let us know if you do as I'd be interested in a set (bulk buy perhaps).

Looks like they do make them . . . wonder how they hold up on the road?? Suppose if you got a 'hard' compound it might be okay.

Don't suppose you have worked out what the speed rating for these tyres is?

I need 145 mph rating

I have been using them on a SWB Historic Rally Car for quite a while now and they are E marked and hence road legal because they were developed for Historic rallying.

There are 3 compounds Standard, X04 and X08.

Standard is a normal road compound and I have no experience.

XO4 is a hard compound by competition standards

X08 is a medium compound and has been the tyre we have used for some time.

I would expect to wear out 1 set of XO8's on a Rally such as the Manx International which has 120 - ish competitive miles but they are very good even in the rain.

There is a also a competition Avon in 185x70x15 and 195x70x15. They are also road legal and look like a truck tyre butr they are very effective and do seem to suit the 911. In recent times the Dunlop seems to have taken over but this may be because dunlop attend all of the BHRC rounds with a truck and fitting facilities and Avon don't bother.

I do get a small discount from Dunlop as we are registered in the BHRC Championship.

but on the vintage tyres site mentioned, only the Michelin XWX's are 150mph rated.

I've called Costco in Leeds to ask for a price on these (they are usually very good on tyres) and I'll let you know what they come back with.

I can vouch for the Avon's. They're CR6ZZ's 185/70/15 and wouldn't choose to use anything else. Every tarmac SWB 911 I've seen at Tuthill's run these and everyone I know who runs/races a hot 356 (175/70/15). They come in two compounds normal and sport, but the normal ones are soft anyway. I've got the sport ones because I only do about 10k miles a year in my 911 anyway and I live right out in the sticks, so the car gets hooned around. They're very predictable even when right on the very edge, when/if they do break it's very gradual with no horrible snap. They cost about £100 a shot and are worth every penny. I don't know about the speed rating but if you consider they're FIA rally approved, road legal and the AVERAGE speed tarmac stage is 80mph they're more than fast enough. The speed rating to 145mph is a bit academic. I can honestly say that I don't think my 132bhp '65 would do 145mph and I wouldn't really want it to! It's quick in the bends and that's the most fun part for me, if you want to drive quick on the straight's buy a BMW.

My 2.4S does need 145mph rated tyres, as it has been known to spend some at speed I am planning on seeing 140mph on the Mulsanne straight in 2006 @ Classic

I have never used the Avons but I have seen them used and many 911s and on 240Zs to good effect.

Dessie Nutt has been running Dunlops for Tarmac this year and Steven Smith used them in X08 Compound on the Manx International.

The Dunlop is 'H' Rated which I think is 130mph

The Avon CR6ZZ is available in 185 x 70 x 15 with H rating in either soft or hardish compounds

It is also available in 205 x 7 x 15 and 215 x 70 x 15 with V rating which I think is 149 mph.

The Avons seem to vary in price fron £120 + VAT for the 185 and £150 + for the 205.

I have been buying 185 Dunlops for about £95 + VAT

I think speed ratings are important for sustained high speeds such as Autobahns but for Rally tures it is obviously much less of an issue.

I have been using these on a Renault 5 in Classic touring car racing. They have now finished their second season and are simply getting better all the time. They are road legal and do get sticky on track.

Try www.mytres.com - they have a couple of tyres at 185/70/15 V rated.

Alternatively why not go to 195/65/15 V rated? Diameter difference between 185/70 and 195/65 is only 0.8%. There's loads of 195/65/15 V's on mytyres.com (even a couple of W's, might be more but got bored!).
