Just see in my 101 projects book stuff mentioned about Porsche short shift gearbox. Does anyone have any info. By the way, mine is still at GCS re backfire due to rustry injectors.

Only the Porsche one is recommended for the 915 gearbox, and even then views are mixed.
It shortens the shift - good
It quickens the shift - not always good
It doesn't improve the smoothness of the selection.

The short shift kits seem to polarize users into 2 groups - those that rate them & those that hate them.
I've fitted Weltmeister short shift kits to both 901 & 915 gearboxes & had mixed views on them - I like the reduced 'throw' but didn't like the increased 'notchiness'.
I would recommend overhauling the std gearchange set-up first - new bushes & spending time adjusting the linkage afterwards - you will be amazed at what a difference this can make.

I have a porsche one in my 72 with 915 box and I like it
It is smooth if everything else in the 915 is good bx ,linkage etc
Echo Andy on the bushes ...mine was a little tight going into 1st until I put new bushes in.
So took the short shift kit apart to fit the bushes ...ssurprising how simple it is ...just a different lever point really.
After fitting the bushes , I couldnt get 1st and second ...readjusted ...then 5th downshifting was catching reverse ...readjusted .....now its great
(All the readjusting took about an hour 6 mths ago and Ive not had to touch it since )
So I guess Im with the bunch that like the short throw

I think that there are a couple of issues that need thinking about.
We have found that in a SWB Rally car 2nd can be a bit of a stretch when you are tightly strapped in and the short shift does help with this problem.
As the 901 box dosen't really respond to rapid gear changes you still do need to be deliberate bit I think the shorter level movement is a positive benefit in a competition car.
The other problem we have with the 901 is the crummy gate definition and managing to downshift into 2nd rather than 4th which can obviously be quite costly.
We have always fitted a "gate lock" kit at the same time as a short shift.
I agree about play in the shift coupler but the standard unit needs rebuilding after every rally even with Weltmeister bushings.
I have just bought one of the WEVO couplers with a disc pack membrane coupling and although it was quite expensive it will reduce maintenance.
I have also fitted a WEVO short shift kit, gate lock and lever to a 915 transmission and it is very positive and gives a great deal more confidence that you will always select the correct gear and I think this is more important that just the speed of the shift.

My experience is similar to most ref'd here, its an impossibly poor at defining the gate I have a 915 but the change from 5th to 4th is nearly impossible. I have to with clutch depressed, change 5th to 3rd as that aligns 4ths then take the gear.
Its also very notchy not a sweet change at all, I m just changing my car back..from people I have spoken to and comments here I think it suits some and doesnt others. A comment I would agree with is your height may effect it.
I m 5'10 my car has 5 point harnesses etc so tight in the seat and that makes the reach very limited which may add to the notchy change as I m reaching rather than delicatly placing changes. Maybe those less vertically challenged would have a better experience..?
Good luck with it

I am told I have a cheap short shift kit in my 911, which is running a late 915 box from around 85. The shift is notchy and I find that I do have make deliberate shifts, to enshure the cog has been selected correctly.
I also have problem where shifting from 5th to 4th can cause the selctor towards the reverse gear... its strange phenominan which I have learnt to 'shift' around. I still have to replace all the bushings in my shifter and get to fiddle with it to make it select better. I am also going to Swepco the box. All this is earmarked for the new year when I am back from Oz.
I have tried the G50 box in a 911 RS that I test drove

and must say that it was simply awesome in comparison to the early boxes.

Does the G50 fit in an early 911 Pre '73?

G50's don't fit without major surgery to the underside of the car. Stick with the 915

I love my (Weltmeister for 915) short shift. However the new stick included in the kit was (way) to short for me so i extended the actual stick. Kind of a contradiction I know, but I like the result.
