Me again!!

I sorted the distributor driveshaft and now it is as close to spot as i can get it.

I fitted the fuel regulator. Unfortunately it reads just under 3psi and the gauge does not move up or down no matter how i set the screw!

I have spark. I have fuel firing into the carbs. I have a high torque starter that spins the motor really well.

I finally got the engine to run. It ran spot on for about 30 - 40 seconds. it idled at 1000rpm, it revved and had zero knocks rattles or bangs.

Then it stopped. Now it won't start again. I removed spark plugs 1 and 3 to see if they were wet. Nope. they were sooty, dry and sooty.

I have an electronic ignition module (from simonbcc) and the coil is reading 11.98 volts.

What the hell am i missing to get this running again?

Are you actually getting fuel through to the carbs, if that regulator is not adjusting, is there a problem with it? Is the fuel pump actually working? If it will not increase or lower fuel pressure, is the pump actually giving sufficient fuel?

Judging by the flow of fuel that came out of the pipe before going to the fpr i'd say there is plenty of fuel from the pump. also when i tweek the csp linkage i see the fuel spurt into each of the carbs.

Could it be the floats have stuck since being off the car for a few months??

Yes the needle valves can stick, or there is much in them.

You say there is plenty of fuel going into the fpr (Fuel pressure regulator?) but it doesn’t mean to say it is coming out of it, if you you have been trying to adjust fuel pressure and nothing happens, something is not right with it..............Just because there is fuel coming out of the accelerator pump jets, it does not mean it is getting full fuel when it is running, it just means there is some in the bowls. It sounds like it is down to fuel

I am leaning towards fuel too. the nagging doubt i have though is, why did it run so well then completely die.

not firing or trying to fire. plugs are dry but fuel is spurting into each carb when the linkage is motioned.

and would both carbs fail in the same way at the very same time?

that last question may very well link back to the fpr being at fault!!!

You might be getting enough fuel to fill both carb bowls, or sufficient to be above the outlet for the accelerator pump jets to work, but it does not mean to say you have sufficient in those bowls constantly to keep the car running. Have you taken the pipe off the FPR outlet to see what is actually coming out of it.
If you are sure you are getting fuel to the carbs, take a spark plug out, leave the lead on and earth the base against something metal, and see if you actually have a spark to ignite the fuel............if not could be the rotor arm centre contact gone, points gap has closed up, coil gone.

Not sure what set up you have so hard to diagnose with the basics given.

Basically for it to run, you need fuel........a spark and air, with the correct mixture.

If you have any carb cleaner, spray that in the carb inlet trumpets and see if it starts, if it does you have a fuel problem somewhere.

It was fuel starvation. I have just connected direct from the pump and we have fuel again.

Plugs are wet. a couple of splutters but no start!

anyhow battery is now low so off out and will revisit tomorrow.

Done it! It runs again.

I had the distributor too loose and it has risen up ever so slightly and lifted out of the driveshaft.

Reset the position and tightened it up. Started on the second spin.

Absolutely delighted.

Good news. Nice to see all your work has paid off.
