I've read numerous posts and threads from various forums ranging across a 15 year time span.

Loctite 574
Loctite 518
the vw 003 paste

are seemingly the most common suggested.

i know an element of personal preference applies to this topic.

Which of the above 3 is most effective.

I've only used 574 for my SC, so have nothing to compare with

I've rebuilt 4 flat 6 engines, all with 574 and none have leaked, anywhere.

I've used the VW sealant too and find it awkward to apply, esp when the garage is below 10 DegC. Those joints did not leak either.

I think preparation is a major part of an effective seal, flat surfaces, free of old materials and finally cleaned with rubbing alcohol.
Finally, stick to the right torque settings, and note the time you have verses the time the 574 starts to set!

To do the flat 6 bock helves you need to get a move on, you have about 15/20 mins which flies past...

Also used 574, and the case join is about the only place it doesn’t leak :)
